About The Position

The primary responsibility of the Health teacher is to develop lesson plans and deliver engaging health instruction, differentiated instruction that is aligned with the curriculum, and provide appropriate assessments. Candidates should be able to demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the concepts of health, safety, child growth and development, effective instructional strategies, classroom management, learning assessment and diagnosis, and research related to learning. The Health teacher is responsible for creating an environment of respect and rapport, and establishing a culture for learning in which safety and order is the norm. District 155 expects teacher candidates to be child-centered professionals with a high degree of energy, flexibility, and initiative. Expectations are that teachers also are good communicators, have well-developed interpersonal skills, practice reflective teaching, and seek continuous self-improvement.

Requirements

  • Current and valid license or appropriate endorsement.

Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute Health education instruction including, but not limited to the following broad areas: Promotion of health and disease prevention concepts and health-enhancing behaviors; effects of the use and abuse of alcohol, tobacco and other drugs; and biological, social, cultural and psychological aspects of human sexuality and family life.
  • Provide differentiated learning experiences for the range of skill levels and developmental needs of your students, and organize/administer physical fitness testing, at least twice per school year.
  • Plan and execute Health education instruction including, but not limited to movement concepts and skills for lifelong physical activities.
  • Provide adaptive Health related activities and instruction for students with IEP's or Section 504 Plans, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with other teachers, professional staff, and administrators in addressing a variety of instructional issues.
  • Provide individualized and small group instruction in order to adapt the curriculum to the needs of each pupil, to the extent feasible.
  • Maintain professional competence through in-service education activities provided by the district, and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
  • Participate cooperatively with the appropriate administrator to develop the method by which he/she will be evaluated in conformance with district guidelines.
  • Communicate with parents and school counselors on pupil progress.
  • Identify pupil needs and cooperate with other professional staff members in helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems.
  • Supervise pupils in out-of-classroom activities during the assigned work day.
  • Participate in curriculum and other developmental programs.
  • Participate in faculty committees and the sponsorship of student activities.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
  • Communicate with students; parents/guardians regarding instructional programs and student progress.
