About The Position

The purpose of this position is to perform active Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) and sexually transmitted infection (STI) surveillance by supporting public and private sector healthcare providers to ensure timely treatment of infected individuals and appropriate disposition of all reportable HIV and STI cases within Maricopa County. As the Health Surveillance Assistant within the Community Health and Records Services Division, you will enter reportable data into the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) PRISM database and perform a wide variety of specialized clerical duties to support the accurate processing, tracking, and follow-up of new and previously reported HIV and STI cases for the Maricopa County Department of Public Health.

Requirements

• Two years of experience performing office, administrative, and clerical duties
• High school diploma or GED
• Post-secondary education may substitute for the required experience on a year-for-year basis
• Must possess or have the ability to obtain a valid Arizona driver’s license by the time of hire
• Must secure and maintain an Arizona Department of Public Safety Level 1 Fingerprint Clearance Card and complete a background check
• Within one month of hire, all employees will be required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
• Travel will be required to attend conferences and training, and to work at various locations
• Must complete HIPAA training, CDC Partner Services training, and on-the-job training in reportable HIV/STI terminology, diagnosis, and treatment within 30 days of hire

• Experience in using computer applications, including spreadsheets, databases, and word processing software, to accurately compile, organize, interpret, and communicate information in a clear and concise manner
• The ability to effectively manage multiple tasks and priorities in a fast-paced environment with frequent interruptions while maintaining professional and effective communication with the public, healthcare providers, and internal staff

Responsibilities

• Conduct HIV and STI surveillance throughout Maricopa County by reviewing laboratory reports, medical records, and healthcare provider information to identify reportable cases, ensure complete and accurate reporting, and initiate appropriate case follow-up.
• Conduct HIV and STI surveillance throughout Maricopa County by reviewing laboratory reports, medical records, and healthcare provider information to identify reportable cases, distinguish new infections from previously treated cases and biological false positives, and ensure complete and accurate reporting. Review reactive syphilis, chlamydia, gonorrhea, HIV, and other reportable STI records to verify demographic, laboratory, diagnosis, and treatment information, ensure compliance with CDC treatment guidelines, and initiate appropriate investigations, referrals, case follow-up, or linkage to care as needed.
• Communicate with healthcare providers regarding disease reporting processes, laboratory results, diagnoses, treatment, and surveillance activities in accordance with CDC treatment guidelines and Arizona reporting requirements, while serving as a resource on HIV/STI testing, treatment, reporting requirements, and available public health services.
• Provide administrative support to the HIV/STI Program by creating and maintaining client case profiles, tracking patient information, managing telephone inquiries, routing requests, maintaining surveillance records, updating outreach databases, filing documentation, and supporting Communicable Disease Investigators (CDIs) and case management activities.
• Maintain the Arizona Department of Health Services (ADHS) PRISM database and other surveillance systems by entering, updating, validating, and retrieving case information and electronic records; performing quality assurance and quality control activities to ensure data accuracy and compliance with reporting requirements; and providing guidance to staff on surveillance processes, case reporting, and data management.
• Answer the HIV/STI results line, delivering confidential test results and providing appropriate follow-up or referral information.
