About The Position

This position is a Health Support Specialist that works in the WIC department, under the direct supervision of the Public Health Services Manager. Health Support Specialists may be required to rotate between lab, receptionist areas and issuance/client processing areas according to staffing needs. Employee may be required to travel to another Volusia WIC site to provide client services. The use of tobacco products or any products containing nicotine such as Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems conflicts with the tobacco cessation responsibilities related to this position. Florida Department of Health in Volusia County (DOH-Volusia) promotes a tobacco free work environment. The use of all tobacco products is not allowed while on duty.

  • Must have at least 2 years of customer service experience
  • Must be willing to support the Florida Department of Health in Volusia County’s position against tobacco use
  • Must be willing to physically come in to the office to perform the duties & responsibilities of the positions
  • Must be authorized to work in the United States without employer sponsorship
  • All Florida Department of Health positions require the incumbent to be able to learn and communicate effectively, orally and in writing, in English.

Responsibilities

  • Determines income eligibility of current and potential WIC program participants based on the federal income guidelines and procedures for determination of income documentation.
  • Inputs income data accurately and completely into the income screen of the WIC Data System.
  • Instructs WIC participants, parent/guardian in the co-caretaker/proxy procedures, appointments scheduling and certification period(s).
  • Completes and/or updates WIC program verification of certification/identification (VOC/ID) cards.
  • Instructs participant, parent/guardian and co-caretaker/proxy in redemption process of WIC program food instruments and notifies participant of their rights and responsibilities as a WIC program participant.
  • Offers the opportunity for voter registration to each eligible participant/parent at certification.
  • Evaluates program eligibility status of each WIC participant to ensure a valid EBT issuance and/or formula issuance can be performed.
  • Issues WIC program EBT issuance and/or formula in accordance with procedures outlined in DHM 150-24 and the WIC System Guide.
  • Completes the second nutrition newsletter contact for food instrument issuance-only clients.
  • Maintains client confidentiality and security of all client information according to the security requirements of the Department of Health.
  • Performs the measurement of height and weight for clients according to guidelines approved by the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
  • Completes the hemoglobin screening test utilizing universal precautions and following the OSHA guidelines.
  • Charts the lab data results in the WIC administrative record.
  • Complies with VCHD bio-hazard waste handling/disposal procedures.
  • Obtains demographic data through telephone and face-to-face interviews with current and potential WIC program participants.
  • Reviews immunization records; verifies immunizations in Florida SHOTS when link to FL WiSE is down; and provides VCHD Immunization Department with copies of out-of-state WIC client transfer immunization records for input in Florida SHOTS.
  • Inputs client information accurately and completely in to the FLWiSE System.
  • Refers WIC participants for appropriate health department services, other state programs and to other applicable community agencies and organizations.
  • Performs follow up activities regarding missed WIC certification or issuance appointments.
  • Acts as liaison for voter registration activities and maintaining a good working relationship with the local Supervisor of Elections Office(s).
  • Provides excellent customer service.
  • Promptly answers the telephone, schedules client appointments, re-schedules and/or follows up missed appointments by telephone or mail.
  • Makes reminder telephone calls to clients for appointments.
  • Maintains food instruments, VOC/ID cards and inventory records separately and securely.
  • Attends and participates in staff development, training, in-services and regularly scheduled department staff meetings.
  • Prepares and submits weekly EARs reports, bi-weekly timesheet and time summaries according to established local agency procedures.
