About The Position

Under the direction of an administrator, this role maintains health records, completes reports, and documents student conditions in accordance with school law and District standards. Responsibilities include administering medication and routine first aid to ill or injured students, assisting students requiring specialized physical health care services or procedures, and aiding in the preparation and arrangements for health screening programs. The Health Services Technician is an entry-level position distinguished from Licensed Vocational Nurse and Instructional Assistant roles by its specific focus on student health records, medication administration, and basic health assessments.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school.
  • One (1) year of experience providing first aid or working in a health care service environment.
  • Valid first aid and CPR certificate issued from an authorized agency.
  • Ability to communicate with others regarding a variety of health-related activities or concerns.
  • Ability to provide health information to parents, students, and staff.
  • Ability to follow medication administration in accordance with Federal and State Law.
  • Ability to learn and apply applicable rules, regulations, and laws affecting student health and safety.
  • Ability to learn and follow policies and procedures of the school and district health programs.
  • Ability to learn procedures and operate a variety of special medical equipment.
  • Ability to screen students for various health and safety concerns.
  • Ability to exercise patience, tact, courtesy, and concern for the feelings of students and adults in difficult and sometimes stressful situations.
  • Ability to compile and verify data and prepare reports.
  • Ability to work independently with little direction.
  • Ability to plan and organize work.
  • Ability to administer first aid, CPR, and emergency health care services in accordance with District policies and procedures.

  • Employees in this classification may lift and carry up to 50 lbs. unassisted and over 50 lbs. with assistance.
  • Must speak clearly, hear normal voice conversation, maintain balance, walk, have rapid mental/muscular coordination, stand, have depth perception, stoop/bend, sit, crawl, kneel, squat, bend repeatedly, see small details, push, reach over head, pull, and use a computer and a telephone.

Nice To Haves

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), Medical Assistant (MA) training or college course work in nursing, health, biology, physiology or related field is highly desirable.
  • Skilled in typing/keyboarding at a minimum of 35 words per minute.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain health records, complete reports, and document student conditions.
  • Administer medication and routine first aid to ill or injured students.
  • Assist students requiring specialized physical health care services or procedures.
  • Assist with the preparation and arrangements for health screening programs.
  • Check students for communicable diseases and advise parents/guardians.
  • Report suspected contagious and communicable diseases to appropriate authorities.
  • Assist in the implementation of school health testing programs (hearing, vision, physicals, dental, scoliosis).
  • Instruct, advise, and assist students regarding personal hygiene and nutrition.
  • Maintain the health office in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
  • Dispense prescribed medications to students and maintain related records.
  • Perform and administer minor first aid and CPR for various injuries.
  • Provide emergency health care services according to individual specialized health care plans.
  • Administer routine and emergency diabetes care tasks.
  • Initiate or perform seizure response measures and administer seizure medications.
  • Initiate or perform severe allergic response measures and administer Epi-pen or other medications.
  • Contact parents, credentialed nurse, administrators, or paramedics as needed.
  • Arrange for release and transportation of students.
  • Establish, prepare, process, and maintain cumulative health record files.
  • Reconcile student health records with enrollment records.
  • Generate lists of students without current legally mandated information and prepare related letters.
  • Review immunization records and enter data into the student information system.
  • Distribute and follow-up on immunization records and emergency information.
  • Assure compliance with State and Federal laws and District policies.
  • Assist parents with completion of health forms and documents.
  • Interpret and explain applicable laws, codes, rules, programs, and regulations.
  • Compile data for reports.
  • Create, update, and maintain confidential lists of medical concerns.
  • Ensure health records are maintained confidentially.
  • Notify teachers of medical accommodations relating to students.
  • Maintain a log of students coming into the health office.
  • Perform clerical duties such as typing, data entry, filing, answering phones, and ordering supplies.
  • Attend meetings to obtain training regarding proper procedures and health services related issues.
  • Supervise students while in the office and assign work to student aides.
