About The Position

The high school Health Science Nurse Instructor is responsible for delivering the Virginia Board of Nursing-approved curriculum to students enrolled in the Health Science programs. The instructor plays a key role in preparing students for the workforce and Health Science Certification Exams by providing rigorous academic and hands-on clinical instruction. This position supports students’ development in healthcare knowledge, technical skills, and professional behaviors required for entry-level work in long-term care and other healthcare settings.

Requirements

  • Hold a current Registered Nurse (RN) license or a current Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) license issued by the Virginia Board of Nursing, with no disciplinary actions.
  • A minimum of two years of nursing experience is required, with at least one year in providing services in an approved clinical facility- i.e., hospitals, assisted living facilities, etc.
  • Must complete a Board of Nursing-approved Train-the-Trainer program before instructing students.
  • Strong communication skills, professionalism, and the ability to connect clinical instruction with classroom content are essential.

Nice To Haves

  • Teaching experience, especially with high school students, is preferred but not required.

Responsibilities

  • Utilize the curriculum designated by the Virginia Department of Education and Hopewell City Public Schools to develop lesson plans that align with the district’s instructional philosophy.
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, utilizing appropriate equipment for the subject area. Translate these plans into learning experiences that develop pertinent sequential assignments, challenge students, and maximize the available time for instruction.
  • Design learning activities to demonstrate the application of skills; guide students in the selection of projects or experiments, and engage all students in real-world work to optimize learning.
  • Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and progress, and modify instructional methods to fit individual students' needs, including students with special needs; conduct individual and small group instruction as needed.
  • Instruct students in the proper and safe use, care, and storage of tools, machines, and equipment.
  • Maintain accurate student records, including attendance reports, grades, competency records, and completer data, as well as other necessary record-keeping activities.
  • Demonstrate commitment to improving professional competence.
  • Sponsor HOSA (Health Occupations Student Association) co-curricular experiences and events.
  • Promote work-based learning, concurrent enrollment, and post-secondary opportunities.
  • Collaborate with other faculty in planning and delivering instruction to students.
  • Communicate student progress with parents, school counselors, and administrators.
  • Participate in faculty meetings and professional development activities.
  • Model equitable practices in all activities.
  • Perform other related work as assigned.
