About The Position

The HSSE Manager is responsible for creating and leading local Health, Safety, Security, and Environmental programs to ensure total compliance with company, state, and federal requirements. As the sole HSSE professional on-site, this position acts as a department owner with full accountability for the administration and maintenance of the Health and Safety Management System, Security Systems, and Environmental Compliance measures. As a key member of the Operations Leadership Team, the HSSE Manager drives safety, wellness, and environmental initiatives to develop safer and more efficient ways of working while coaching the plant leadership team to ensure consistent application throughout the facility.

Requirements

  • Minimum 5–7 years of experience in an Occupational Health and Safety role within a manufacturing or process industry.
  • Bachelor of Science in Occupational Health and Safety, or a degree in a related discipline with equivalent experience.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to work effectively on a cross-functional leadership team.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of Federal and State Health and Safety legislation combined with training in hazard recognition and assessment.
  • Strong problem-solving, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
  • Proven capability of interacting with all levels within the organization and the ability to deliver positive business results.
  • Experience with OSHA PSM and EPA RMP programs
  • Knowledge of environmental permitting

  • Relevant professional certifications (e.g., CSP, CIH) are highly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic leadership, mentoring, and direction to managers, supervisors, and associates in safety and incident prevention activities.
  • Own and manage the entire departmental HSSE budget, with full responsibility for daily spend, resource allocation, and safety-related capital projects.
  • Lead the site as the sole HSSE authority, ensuring that safety remains the most important priority across all facility operations.
  • Provide a meaningful orientation that gets new employees excited to start their first day while meeting all required compliance trainings.
  • Foster strong professional relationships to gain safety commitment from all associates.
  • Generate and submit all internal and external reporting as required by regulatory bodies and corporate standards.
  • Implement and monitor a Health and Safety Management System that meets OSHA regulations and coordinate its annual review.
  • Seek continuous improvement by ensuring that regular inspections, hazard analysis, risk assessments, and audits are conducted.
  • Administer and maintain incident reporting and recording systems to ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
  • Utilize incident and root cause analysis to provide direction and recommendations on how to mitigate losses and foster a proactive safety culture.
  • Communicate with the employee's health care practitioner to clarify functional abilities and facilitate a safe return to work.
  • Produce reports and statistical information to analyze trends and present findings or recommendations to management.
  • File Workers' Compensation and OSHA reports, ensuring all required information is clearly presented and reported within required timelines.
  • Develop an emergency response program and train the facility on applicable procedures such as fire evacuation, tornado shelter-in-place, and ammonia emergencies.
  • Manage and maintain compliance requirements for all applicable environmental permits, including air, water, and waste.
  • Provide and manage food defense measures and site security protocols as required.
  • Ensure a secure facility by implementing and maintaining a well-documented security plan, issuing badges, and working with the guard shack to manage access control.
