About The Position

This is a great opportunity for a student or volunteer pursuing a career in Health and Safety. In this role, you will report directly to our Compliance Officer. You will work in a professional office setting and occasionally travel to our local program sites. Using our agency's core approach (the Teaching Family Model), you will assist with maintaining the organization’s Occupational Health & Safety Management System. This is an unpaid, temporary position based on your work/school schedule, following a daytime routine with occasional flexible hours for audits and inspections.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a career or experience in Occupational Health and Safety, Emergency Management, Human Resources, or any other related field.
  • Proficient at using Google tools (Docs, Sheets, Slides, Gmail) and comfortable learning new computer tracking systems.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple deadlines at once.
  • Strong written and spoken communication skills, with the ability to keep private information confidential.
  • Respectful of different cultures, heritages, and spiritual beliefs.
  • A Police Information Check with a Vulnerable Sector Search and an Intervention Record Check must be completed prior to commencement (any records must be disclosed before hire).

Responsibilities

  • Support workplace inspections by preparing checklists, recording findings, and tracking corrective actions.
  • Assist with hazard assessments and hazard identification activities.
  • Help investigate incidents, near misses, and injuries by gathering information and maintaining records.
  • Maintain OHS records, databases, and electronic filing systems.
  • Assist in monitoring compliance with Alberta Occupational Health and Safety legislation and organizational policies.
  • Support emergency preparedness activities, including updating emergency plans and evacuation information.
  • Help coordinate OHS committee meetings, prepare agendas, record minutes, and track action items.
  • Assist with the development of safety bulletins, newsletters, posters, and employee awareness materials.
  • Support orientation and training initiatives by preparing materials and tracking completion records.
  • Help update and organize OHS policies, procedures, and related documentation.
  • Assist with licensing, accreditation, and regulatory documentation as required.
  • Help monitor inspection schedules for fire extinguishers, first aid supplies, emergency equipment, and other safety-related items.
  • Compile OHS statistics and prepare reports, charts, and dashboards.
  • Conduct research on health and safety best practices and emerging legislation.
  • Participate in special projects related to continuous quality improvement, risk management, and workplace safety.
  • Collaborate with managers and program staff to promote a positive safety culture.
  • Perform other administrative and project-related duties in support of the Occupational Health & Safety program.
