About The Position

Freeport-McMoRan is offering internship opportunities focused on recognizing excellence and promoting safe production through a culture supported by core values. Interns will join a collaborative environment to gain skills and experience for a successful future. The program is designed for full-time students at accredited four-year universities and recent graduates in North America. These are temporary, full-time, paid positions typically running from May through August. This position is not eligible for immigration work visa sponsorship.

Requirements

Currently enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year university pursuing a degree, bachelor’s or higher, in an appropriate Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene or other closely related field; OR Recent graduate (within 12 months prior to internship start date) with a degree, bachelor’s or higher, in Health & Safety, Industrial Hygiene or closely related field.
Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills.
Highly accurate and detail-oriented.
Strong oral and written communication skills.
Demonstrates initiative, organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure.
Demonstrates ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team.
Ability to understand, apply and communicate verbal and written work and safety-related instructions, procedures, job assignments and applicable safety standards in English.
Must be able to multi-task, work under pressure, and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
Regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear, and see.
Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the workday.

Responsibilities

Work directly with a mentor in Health & Safety and/or Industrial Hygiene to find solutions to real-world problems.
Interact directly with company leaders to discuss tactical steps to reduce workplace exposure and enhance safety and health.
Gain skills and knowledge to become future leaders in the mining industry.
Build a lasting professional network through social events and engaging activities.
Identify health & safety hazards in mine, processing, and manufacturing areas and assist in developing corrective action plans.
Conduct fatal risk management assessments and identify potential workplace hazards.
Attend daily lineout meetings with employees and leaders to discuss safety topics.
Support incident investigations to determine root causes and prevent reoccurrences.
Inspect work areas and facilities to ensure a safe working environment and regulatory compliance.
Assist in onboarding contract employees.
Investigate and develop emergency response & evacuation plans.
Engage with the workforce to raise awareness of health & safety policies, coordinate daily safety activities, and plan jobs to identify and mitigate risks.
Educate on and identify health and safety hazards, working with employees and leaders to mitigate risks.
Maintain a continual presence in the field as a resource to employees, answering safety questions, engaging in tailgate meetings, and discussing safety controls.
Undertake projects focused on identifying and mitigating hazards of specific jobs or work environments to promote employee health and well-being, including understanding fatal risks and researching mitigation methods.
Perform other duties as required.
