About The Position

Freeport-McMoRan is offering internship opportunities for full-time students and recent graduates in North America. These are temporary, full-time, paid positions typically running from May through August. The program aims to provide valuable skills and experience in a collaborative environment, guided by the company's core values and commitment to safe production. This position may be eligible for immigration work visa sponsorship for foreign nationals on F-1 or other full-time statuses, based on business needs, performance, and site approval.

Requirements

  • Currently enrolled full-time at an accredited four-year university pursuing a degree, bachelor’s or higher, in Geology or closely related field; OR Recent graduate (within 12 months prior to internship start date) pursuing a degree, bachelor’s or higher in Geology or closely related field.
  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Strong data analysis and problem-solving skills.
  • Highly accurate and detail-oriented.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates initiative, organizational skills and ability to work well under pressure.
  • Demonstrates ability to collaborate and work effectively in a team environment.
  • Ability to understand, apply and communicate verbal and written work and safety-related instructions, procedures, job assignments and applicable safety standards in English.
  • Must be able to multi-task, work under pressure, and meet time-sensitive deadlines.
  • Regularly required to stand, sit, demonstrate manual dexterity, climb stairs and ladders, work on elevated platforms, talk, hear, and see.
  • Occasionally may be required to lift moderately heavy objects up to thirty (30) pounds during the workday.

Responsibilities

  • Assist exploration geologic staff with various projects.
  • Create sample identification labels and submit samples for laboratory analysis.
  • Retrieve laboratory analyses for geological materials and load results into a relational database.
  • Coordinate submittal of standard reference materials and preparation/submittal of duplicate samples to the laboratory.
  • Perform routine comparisons of reference and duplicate samples against laboratory determinations.
  • Prepare daily and monthly evaluations of laboratory accuracy and precision.
  • Enter geological codes into computerized databases and validate them against established standards.
  • Digitize geological maps and cross-sections.
  • Log drill cuttings and drill core samples to identify rock types, copper mineralization, alteration, and acid consumption.
  • Map pit walls.
  • Provide support to the district exploration and geology department.
  • Compile drilling, geological mapping, geochemical, alteration, geophysical, and property information.
  • Perform other duties as required.
