About The Position

The Prevention Department provides service along a continuum to assist customers with the development and implementation of safe work environments. Health and Safety Consultants work side-by-side with customers to deliver primary prevention strategies, and their responsibilities include relationship building to understanding employer operations, assessing existing safety programs to identify areas needing improvement, and recommending solutions through reports and presentations.

Requirements

  • Two (2) years successfully completed post-secondary including course work in Occupational Health and Safety or other related fields, or eligibility for certification as a Canadian Registered Safety Professional; and three (3) years of successful experience demonstrating:
  • Expertise in occupational health and safety management system (SMS) development, implementation and improvement.
  • Collaborative consulting experience, leading SMS improvements in workplace setting.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of provincial and federal occupational health and safety legislation.
  • Competent (Advanced level) in a number of computer related software applications e.g. MS Office (Word, Power Point and Excel); Lotus Notes; web-based meeting and training software.
  • A high degree of resourcefulness and ability to organize work, accurately complete assigned tasks and accept responsibility to work independently or as a member of a team.
  • Willingness and ability to travel frequently including overnight stays.
  • Good written and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Sound judgment, problem solving skills, ability to make effective business decisions.
  • Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships and partnerships with stakeholders, internal operational departments and other external organizations.
  • Ability to adapt approach to work effectively in a variety of situations with a variety of stakeholders.
  • A valid class 5 driver’s license.

Responsibilities

  • Consults and educates employers on their safety management system effectiveness, applicable legislation, occupational health and safety, industrial hygiene and ergonomic injury prevention activities to support reduction in injuries and related costs. This includes developing relationships with employers through on-site and direct contact. Provide injury statistical analysis to ensure that safety and health services provided are based on the customers’ needs and their organizational strategies.
  • Leads and conducts Safety Management System Assessments (SMSAs) and provides recommendations for implementation and enhancement to employers existing safety management systems and processes through collaborative consulting. Completes reports resulting from assessments and provides feedback and collaborative health and safety consulting to employers.
  • Provide expert advice to employers on implementing and sustaining all safety management system elements for their particular industry. Support and consult with employers on serious injury investigations, hazard assessments and corrective action plans. Demonstrate and coach employers on SMS improvement and implementation. Collaborate with employers to develop metrics and milestones to track the implementation and success of their safety programs.
  • Actively develop and distribute injury reduction resources to assist Saskatchewan employers.
  • Deliver approved WCB/WorkSafe/external training material to workers and employers. Demonstrate proper delivery of course material. Mentor and provide coaching feedback to new Prevention staff.
  • Support WCB’s third-party training certification process by conducting on-site course evaluations of third-party training providers to ensure specific, documented quality requirements are met. Report back to QAQC any challenges for third-party training provider in meeting course delivery expecations as per the approved Worksafe Training Standard. Coach third-party suppliers on in-class training standard requirements to support successful certificiation as required.
  • Maintains awareness of current trends and new information regarding best practices for injury prevention and disability management. Maintains awareness of current WCB legislation, Board policies and procedures to support employers.
  • Engage with employers directly to promote workplace health and safety. Attend tradeshows and other events to network with customers and promote occupational health and safety. Explain Prevention department and funded safety association services that best support specific employer health and safety needs. Follow-up with employers directly to provide safety and health services as required.
  • Track engagement with employers utilizing Preventions’ customer management database to ensure communication between employer activities with appropriate colleagues and management. Compose memos, letter and various reports as required, utilizing word processing, spreadsheets and other software.
  • Participate in committees associated with health and safety. Serve as board members on safety and health related boards (Canadian Society for Safety Engineering, etc.) to network and develop professional skills. Communicate relevant topics, discussion outcomes or partnership opportunities to the Prevention department.
  • Utilize leading and lagging indicators, key performance indicators (KPIs) and analyze industry trends within industry portfolio to support employers’ safety management system improvement, corrective action plan implementation and reduce injuries. Support the implementation of employer specific safety metrics to drive improvements within an organizations safety management system.
  • Travels on a regular basis to employer work sites, adjusting work and travel schedule to meet employer’s availability.
