About The Position

The Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Director is responsible for ongoing compliance with all regulatory regulations set forth by applicable federal, state and local agencies. Further, ensuring that employees receive proper training regarding company-specific, Occupational Safety & Health Administration and Environmental Protection Agency requirements at all company locations. The position ensures that all occupational accidents, illnesses, incidents or near misses are promptly and thoroughly investigated and documented as required.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in health, Safety, Industrial Hygiene or Environmental with 10 years’ experience, or the equivalent progressive experience managing corporate HSE programs.
• 10 years of experience in dealing and negotiating with federal, state and local regulatory agencies and employing outside counsel or experts as needed to protect company assets and employees.
• Ability to problem solve and manage projects, as well as excellent written and verbal communication skills necessary to solve a wide range of complex, multi-disciplinary issues.
• Excellent reading, communication, and organizational skills.
• Must possess intermediate proficiency in the use of a Personal Computer (PC) and related Microsoft business software.
• Accurate typing skills and/or data entry skills.
• Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide units of U.S. currency, weight, volume, and distance measurements, etc.
• Ability to read and comprehend complex information and instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
• Ability to read and interpret documents and write routine correspondence.
• Promptly and professionally responds to regulator and customer needs.
• Gathers and analyzes information skillfully.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to other associates of the organization.
• Possess functional analytical skills, strategic planning, and a commitment to continuous improvement.
• Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
• Ability to compose sensitive, non-routine correspondence requiring tact and diplomacy and/or complex reports or summaries for which established formats generally do not exist.

Responsibilities

• Develop and execute the company’s Health, Safety, and Environmental (HSE) strategy.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA, EPA, and all applicable state, county, and city regulations.
• Manage regulatory reporting, permitting, OSHA logs, workers’ compensation reporting, and internal case tracking.
• Serve as the primary point of contact for regulatory agencies and environmental permitting authorities and interface with regulators during inspections, reporting, or incident investigations and maintain all required safety certifications, registrations, and records.
• Lead company-wide safety culture initiatives focusing on hazard awareness, employee engagement, and accountability.
• Develop, deliver, and maintain comprehensive safety training programs.
• Ensure employees are properly trained on company-specific, OSHA, and EPA requirements through orientations, daily safety meetings, periodic HSE meetings, and formal training sessions.
• Lead and deliver training sessions as needed.
• Maintain, communicate, and enforce HSE policies and procedures across all operations.
• Lead and participate in plant safety audits, job-site inspections, and facility walkthroughs.
• Conduct routine HSE inspections of work areas, offices, and company vehicles.
• Observe workplace conditions, equipment, and employee behaviors to identify hazards and implement corrective actions.
• Drive accountability at each location by partnering with site leaders to reinforce compliance with company safety policies, procedures, and expectations.
• Make recommendations regarding corrective actions and disciplinary measures for policy infractions.
• Ensure all safety and environmental equipment is properly maintained.
• Collaborate with operations, engineering, and maintenance teams to proactively mitigate workplace risks.
• Oversee investigations related to injuries, near misses, property damage, environmental spills, and other HSE incidents.
• Prepare detailed investigation reports including factual findings, conclusions, and corrective/preventive action recommendations.
• Assist in identifying and eliminating future workplace hazards.
• Ensure employees and contractors maintain required credentials and personal protective equipment (PPE).
• Assist and manage contractors and subcontractor safety prequalification and onboarding.
• Verify proper workplace signage and adherence to all reporting and compliance requirements.
• Analyze safety performance trends and prepare reports for leadership.
• Recommend improvements to tools, equipment, processes, and training programs to reduce risk.
• Provide strategic HSE guidance to senior leadership and plant management teams.
• Support company acquisition initiatives through HSE assessments and onboarding activities.
