About The Position

Goodwill Industries, Ontario Great Lakes is seeking a Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Specialist to support the development, implementation, and monitoring of occupational health and safety programs. This field-based role involves partnering with operational leaders and employees to ensure workplace safety, regulatory compliance, conduct incident investigations, workplace inspections, risk assessments, and drive continuous improvement initiatives across multiple Goodwill locations. The position requires a valid Class G driver's license and access to a reliable insured vehicle.

Requirements

  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Health and Safety, Human Resources, or a related field.
  • Minimum 2–3 years of experience supporting occupational health and safety programs in operational environments.
  • Experience conducting workplace inspections, incident investigations, and root cause analyses.
  • Experience working in multi-site environments such as retail, warehousing, manufacturing, logistics, or similar sectors preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of Ontario Occupational Health and Safety legislation and regulations.
  • Ability to conduct inspections, investigations, risk assessments, and root cause analyses.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to interpret legislation and apply requirements in operational environments.
  • Experience working with data, trends, and reporting tools.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong coaching, influencing, and relationship-building capabilities.
  • Exceptional organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and health and safety management systems.
  • Comfortable facilitating discussions, presentations, and safety training.
  • Valid Class G Driver's License and access to a reliable insured vehicle.

  • Experience with WSIB claims administration and return-to-work processes is considered an asset.
  • Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification is considered an asset.
  • Standard First Aid and CPR Certification is considered an asset.
  • Professional health and safety designation, or progress toward one (CHSC, NCSO, CRSP, or equivalent), is considered an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct workplace inspections across multiple Goodwill locations.
  • Identify hazards, unsafe conditions, and opportunities for safety improvement.
  • Verify completion and effectiveness of corrective actions arising from inspections, audits, incidents, and safety concerns.
  • Support operational leaders in maintaining compliance with Occupational Health and Safety legislation, policies, and safe work practices.
  • Conduct risk assessments and assist with implementing hazard control measures.
  • Provide health and safety coaching to employees and leaders.
  • Support onboarding activities for new locations, salaried employees, and managers from a health and safety perspective.
  • Assist Joint Health and Safety Committees (JHSCs) through documentation, certification tracking, training coordination, action item monitoring, and committee follow-up.
  • Investigate workplace incidents, injuries, illnesses, and near misses.
  • Conduct root cause analyses and identify contributing factors.
  • Develop practical corrective and preventative action plans.
  • Monitor completion and effectiveness of corrective actions.
  • Analyze incident data and identify trends and recurring hazards.
  • Escalate serious incidents and high-risk situations to the Health and Safety Manager.
  • Support Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) reporting and administration requirements.
  • Support implementation of organizational health and safety programs and initiatives.
  • Maintain Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs) and Job Task Analyses (JTAs).
  • Monitor certifications, inspections, compliance requirements, and corrective action tracking.
  • Maintain health and safety records, metrics, dashboards, and reporting tools.
  • Assist with internal and external audits, including documentation and follow-up actions.
  • Support the review and maintenance of health and safety procedures, forms, and documentation.
  • Collaborate with Learning and Development to support training and compliance requirements.
  • Analyze health and safety data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Research legislative changes, industry standards, and best practices.
  • Recommend improvements to programs, procedures, and workplace practices.
  • Support organizational safety initiatives and continuous improvement projects.
  • Develop safety awareness materials, toolbox talks, safety bulletins, and training resources.
  • Participate in safety committees, meetings, and awareness campaigns.
  • Partner with Human Resources, Learning and Development, and Loss Prevention teams to support investigations and organizational safety initiatives.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness activities, drills, inspections, and post-incident reviews.
  • Support annual policy reviews and updates.
