About The Position

Technicians assist in providing health education to Tribal communities by supporting the development and implementation of grant-funded project activities and/or services. The Health Promotion and Education (HPE) Technician will focus on one to two health topics such as tobacco use, suicide prevention, opioid use, domestic and intimate partner violence, obesity, teen pregnancy, sexual health, injury and drug/alcohol prevention, harm reduction/syringe exchange, and healthy lifestyle choices. This role involves close work with the Tribal community through one-on-one education, community outreach, and assisting in the facilitation of trainings and presentations. All planning and implementation are guided by the cultural, traditional values and practices of American Indians and Alaska Natives.

Requirements

High school diploma or equivalent; Entry level (for Level I).
Associate's degree (A. A.) in health related field or equivalent from two-year College or technical school; or two (2) years related experience and/or training; or some related college level courses or equivalent combination of education and/or experience (for Level II).
Associate's degree (A. A.) in health related field or equivalent from two-year College or technical school and one year (1) of related experience in the field; or high school diploma or equivalent, or three (3) years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience (for Level III).
Basic personal computer skills including electronic mail, word processing, spreadsheet, graphics, etc.
Demonstrate a commitment to the provision of culturally sensitive counseling services to American Indians.

Responsibilities

Assists with the planning, coordination, implementation and evaluation of project activities, meetings, events, presentations, and trainings.
Assists in providing/facilitating individual and/or group education activities with community members and partners.
Identifies and accesses community resources to organize community meetings and events.
Participates in assigned meetings, webinars, and trainings within the HPE Department, Tribal Public Health Division, UIHS’ all staff meetings, and with community partners.
Completes grant activities as assigned, which may include developing/creating articles, flyers, educational packets, social media posts, and public service announcements.
Assists in completing all reports and data collection as required.
Maintains and completes a detailed monthly report of activities accomplished in connection to their assigned grant/project, and collects documentation to verify completed activities.
Schedules and helps plan transportation for program meetings, activities, and events when necessary.
Adheres to accreditation, Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), compliance standards/guidelines, and UIHS Policies and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Maintains a professional, organized, and clean working environment.
Must be willing to learn more about the American Indian culture and attend at least one Cultural Presentation/Training per year.
Must be willing to work with American Indian/Alaska Native people and demonstrate cultural awareness and humility.
Must be willing to deliver services in a culturally responsive manner.
Works with HPE Specialists and Project Supervisors to develop presentations/training content, and co-facilitates presentations/trainings.
Co-leads meetings with tribal and community groups to share program updates, plan future events/activities/trainings, conduct focus groups, and solicit input for project development.
Co-leads in the development and implementation of needs assessments, surveys, pre/post tests, evaluations, and focus groups.
Interprets cultural methodologies and approaches to explain differences and similarities in behavior, attitudes, and practices of American Indians/Alaska Natives to other health professional staff.
Provides transportation for program meetings, activities, and events when necessary.
Plans and implements health promotion activities in response to the analysis of needs assessments, surveys, pre/posttests, evaluation, key informant interviews and focus groups.
Assists in the development of departmental policy, procedures, and quality improvement activities within the clinic as directed.
Assists tribes, community, and others with the development and adoption of policies and implementation of best practices.
Undertakes special projects as assigned by the Health Promotion and Education Supervisor and/or Manager.
