About The Position

The Center for Health Equity & Community Wellness (CHECW) aims to eliminate health inequities that lead to premature mortality. CHECW works to increase the visibility of socially unjust policies and advocate for redress for impacted NYC communities by addressing inequities across community and healthcare systems in partnership with various organizations. The division focuses on social determinants of health, including environmental and commercial factors, to improve the health and well-being of New Yorkers. CHECW is composed of several bureaus, including the Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health, which will continue to oversee programming and planning for the Brownsville Neighborhood Health Action Center, with satellite programming in Bedford and Bushwick. This bureau supports programming, planning, and research to address racial inequities causing premature mortality in Central Brooklyn. The Bureau of Brooklyn Neighborhood Health is seeking a Health Education Associate to manage and expand health education programming for the East Harlem Family Wellness Suite (FWS). This position is located at the Harlem Neighborhood Health Action Center.

Requirements

  • A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college and two years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties described above; or
  • High school graduation or equivalent and six years of experience in community work or community centered activities in an area related to the duties as described above; or
  • Education and/or experience which is equivalent to '1' or '2' above.
  • All candidates must have at least one year of experience as described in '1' above.
  • Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds.

  • Strong coordination and organizational skills.
  • Detail-oriented and able to manage projects and work independently.

  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Open to flexible work hours, including some work in the evenings and/or on weekends.
  • Hold certification as a Certified Lactation Consultant or have interest in pursuing this certification.
  • Bilingual (Spanish).

Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive portfolio of health education programming, including creating and facilitating original content and programming delivered by contracted vendors, with support from the FWS manager and Health Education team.
  • Recruit and vet prospective speakers/vendors for educational series or special events.
  • Tailor workshops and classes to meet the language and cultural needs of community residents regarding maternal health, including managing translation requests for interpreters or documents.
  • Manage the promotion and recruitment for FWS health education programming, including managing electronic registration/presentation platforms and developing promotional materials.
  • Maintain records of the health education programming portfolio, including attendance sheets, assessment tools, and related forms.
  • Support the administrative needs of the health education programming portfolio.
  • Develop continuous quality improvement and/or evaluation tools for all health education programming, with support from evaluation colleagues and FWS leadership, and participate in data analysis and regular reporting.
  • Lead the creation and facilitation of community health-promotion events (e.g., Maternal Mental Health, Meet the Doula/Midwife, Black Maternal Health Week, Hypertension, Gestational Diabetes).
  • Support the promotion of other suite programming portfolios as a team player.
  • Support the suite with successful client intake, referrals to services, and management of appropriate client management software.
  • As a Certified Lactation Consultant (CLC) or soon-to-be CLC, support the increased utilization of the FWS lactation room and other lactation clinic programming.
  • Assist with the management of the FWS Advisory Board with support from the FWS team.
  • Support other East Harlem FWS programming and larger FWS programming in the city as necessary.
  • Assist with venue set-up at community outreach events, including unloading and arranging chairs and tables, and distributing promotional items and public health education pamphlets.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisor and FWS leadership.
