About The Position

Within Hennepin Healthcare System’s culture of Patient & Family Centered Care and under direct RN supervision, the Health Care Assistant contributes to the health and well-being of assigned patients by providing quality patient care, performing technical procedures, and completing related duties that meet established standards. The role acts as a competent, caring, and collaborative member of the patient care team. It may also provide unit clerical support, including identified EHR duties, answering phones, and coordinating unit communication. This is an in-person position in the Transportation department at 0.8 FTE. Workdays vary and include every other weekend. Shifts rotate between weekday hours of 11:00 a.m.–7:30 p.m. or 2:30 p.m.–11:00 p.m., and weekend hours of 12:00 p.m.–8:30 p.m. or 2:30 p.m.–11:00 p.m. Shifts are eight hours long.

Requirements

Meet at least one of the following minimum qualifications: current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire (maintenance of certification or registry is not required after hire); completion of one semester of clinical rotation within an accredited nursing program; enrollment in and successful completion of the Hennepin Healthcare-determined Nursing Assistant program; or six months of acute nursing assistance experience.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
Basic computer knowledge.
Ability to work cohesively and respectfully with a diverse workforce and patient population.
Ability to prioritize, organize, and communicate with multidisciplinary staff.
Ability to adapt to sometimes rapidly changing and unpredictable situations.
Ability to read and follow written instructions and understand and communicate verbal and written information.
Ability to meet departmental performance expectations and HCMC standards related to quality, accuracy, productivity, Patient & Family Centered Care, and customer service.

Nice To Haves

High school graduate or equivalent.
Basic Life Support.
Training or equivalent experience as a nursing assistant, CNA, or EMT.
Current enrollment in a four-year RN program.
Experience with EPIC and/or a similar electronic health record system.
One year of Nursing Assistant experience in a similar hospital setting.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain positive working relationships with patients and families, team members, department personnel, and medical center personnel, using Patient & Family Centered Care principles.
Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, grooming, and bathing.
Respond promptly to patient call lights, identify needs, provide an appropriate response, or communicate needs to the appropriate team member.
Perform intentional rounding in collaboration with the RN.
Take and record patient vital signs as prescribed by nursing protocol or physician order.
Measure and record patient intake and output according to established protocol and orders.
Conduct assigned or delegated point-of-care tests.
Communicate changes or pertinent information about patients’ physical appearance, attitude, intake and output, vital signs, and point-of-care test results to the nurse; record which nurse was notified about abnormal results.
Keep patient rooms neat, clean, and orderly; change bed linen as scheduled and when needed.
Escort patients on foot or transport them using carts, beds, or wheelchairs.
Obtain and stock equipment and supplies, and ensure equipment is clean and operable.
Greet and relay information to appropriate staff, physicians, or family members.
Inventory, document, and secure patient belongings and valuables.
Collect specimens using clean technique and label them appropriately.
Dispose of trash, linens, and supplies appropriately.
Ensure patient and supply rooms are properly stocked and linen is covered.
Support unit and medical center compliance with regulatory standards, customer service, and other initiatives.
After training, competency validation, and delegation from an RN, perform applicable technical procedures, such as maintaining oxygen equipment, oral suctioning, routine incision care, skin care, applying and changing non-sterile dressings, applying warm or cold compresses or non-prescription topical creams or ointments, 12-lead EKGs, phlebotomies, and discontinuing IVs, saline locks, and Foley catheters.
Record actions in the EHR.
Perform EHR clerical duties, answer phones, and triage calls appropriately.
Perform responsibilities and duties required by Patient Care Services as defined in the scope of service to address the unique nature of clients.
