About The Position

The Health Care Assistant works in the Medicine Intensive Care Unit at Hennepin Healthcare System, within its Patient & Family Centered Care culture and under direct RN supervision. The role contributes to the health and well-being of assigned patients by providing quality patient care, carrying out technical procedures, and performing related duties in accordance with established standards. The assistant is a competent, caring, and collaborative member of the patient care team. The position may also provide unit clerical support, including identified EHR duties, answering phones, and coordinating unit communication. This is a 0.8 FTE position (64 hours per two-week pay period) with varied workdays, including every other weekend. Shifts rotate between days and evenings and are eight hours long. The position is located on the main campus.

Requirements

Meet at least one of the stated minimum qualification pathways: hold current certification on the Minnesota Nursing Assistant Registry upon hire; complete one semester of clinical rotation within an accredited nursing program; enroll in and successfully complete the Hennepin Healthcare-determined Nursing Assistant program; or have six months of acute nursing assistance experience.
Knowledge of basic medical terminology.
Basic computer knowledge.
Ability to work cohesively and respectfully with a diverse workforce and patient population.
Ability to prioritize, organize, and communicate with multidisciplinary staff.
Ability to adapt to rapidly changing and unpredictable situations.
Ability to read and follow written instructions and understand and communicate verbal and written information.
Ability to perform duties in accordance with departmental performance expectations and HCMC standards for quality, accuracy, productivity, patient- and family-centered care, and customer service.

Nice To Haves

High school graduate or equivalent.
Basic Life Support.
Training or equivalent experience as a nursing assistant, CNA, or EMT.
Current student enrolled in a four-year RN program.
Experience with EPIC or a similar electronic health record system.
One year of Nursing Assistant experience in a similar hospital setting.

Responsibilities

Develop and maintain positive working relationships with patients and families, team members, department personnel, and medical center personnel using Patient & Family Centered Care principles.
Assist patients with activities of daily living, including hygiene, grooming, and bathing.
Respond promptly to call lights, identify patient needs, provide appropriate assistance, or communicate needs to the appropriate team member.
Perform intentional rounding in collaboration with the RN.
Take and record patient vital signs according to nursing protocol or physician orders.
Measure and record patient intake and output according to established protocols and orders.
Conduct assigned or delegated point-of-care tests.
Communicate changes or pertinent information about patients—including physical appearance, attitude, intake and output, vital signs, and point-of-care testing—to the nurse, and record which nurse was notified of abnormal results.
Keep patient rooms neat, clean, and orderly; change bed linens as scheduled and as needed.
Escort patients on foot or transport them using carts, beds, or wheelchairs.
Procure and stock equipment and supplies, and ensure equipment is clean and operable.
Greet and relay information to appropriate staff, physicians, or family members.
Inventory patient belongings and valuables and document and secure them.
Collect specimens using clean technique and label them appropriately.
Dispose of trash, linens, and supplies appropriately.
Ensure patient and supply rooms are properly stocked and linen is covered.
Support unit and medical center compliance with regulatory standards, customer service, and other initiatives.
After training and competency validation, and when delegated by an RN, perform technical procedures such as maintaining oxygen equipment, oral suctioning, routine incision care, skin care, applying and changing non-sterile dressings, applying warm or cold compresses or non-prescription topical creams or ointments, performing 12-lead EKGs and phlebotomies, and discontinuing IVs, saline locks, and Foley catheters.
Record actions in the EHR.
Perform clerical EHR duties, answer phones, and triage calls appropriately.
Perform responsibilities and duties required by Patient Care Services as defined in the scope of service to address the unique nature of clients.
