About The Position

Cleveland-Cliffs Steel has an immediate opportunity for a Safety Representative at our Burns Harbor, IN operation. The Safety Specialist is responsible for actively working with operating, maintenance, and staff departments in developing, implementing, and managing comprehensive safety and industrial hygiene programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health or significant experience in the field of safety.
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written), team building, problem-solving, and decision-making skills.
  • Ability to effectively work in a team-oriented environment.
  • Self-motivated with minimal direction required for day-to-day operations.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • 3 years’ experience in a safety and health position.
  • Willing and able to work nights, weekends and/or holidays when on call or during extended outages.
  • Applicants for this position must be currently legally authorized to work in the United States on a full-time basis.

Nice To Haves

  • Related experience in a manufacturing or industrial environment.
  • Successful track record working with a represented workforce in a heavy industrial setting.
  • Knowledge of Safety and Health regulations including OSHA, ANSI, ASME, NFPA, Regulations.
  • Management system internal audit experience.
  • 5+ years of experience in an industrial safety and health position.
  • Strong public speaking abilities

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate visible safety leadership and mentor managers and supervisors in executing safety responsibilities.
  • Partner with operations, maintenance, engineering, and other teams to integrate safety into all aspects of the business.
  • Support management during regulatory inspections and ensure compliance with safety regulations and standards.
  • Conduct safety inspections, field audits, and assessments of equipment, facilities, and work practices to identify and mitigate hazards.
  • Maintain and continuously improve safety programs and management systems, including ISO 45001.
  • Monitor and implement evolving safety regulations and industry best practices.
  • Lead and participate in incident investigations using root cause analysis and drive corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Support serious injury and fatality (SIF) prevention efforts, hazard assessments, and the safe design and installation of equipment and systems.
  • Develop and deliver safety training, communicate safety performance metrics, facilitate safety meetings, and serve as a technical resource for employees, management, and the Plant Safety Committee.
