About The Position

Reporting to the VP, Operations, the Health & Safety Officer is responsible for the overall administration, coordination, and continuous improvement of Premier Candle’s occupational health, safety, and environmental programs. The role serves as the primary point of contact for all health and safety matters, ensuring compliance with legislative requirements, supporting incident prevention, promoting a strong safety culture, and maintaining a safe and healthy workplace for all employees.

Requirements

  • University degree or college diploma in Occupational Health & Safety, Environmental Health & Safety, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 3+ years of Health, Safety & Environmental (HSE/EHS) experience within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong knowledge of applicable legislation and standards, including the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), WSIB, CSA standards, and Environmental Protection Act.
  • Hands-on experience implementing and maintaining health, safety, and environmental programs, including workplace inspections, audits, investigations, and corrective actions.
  • Experience with workplace injury reporting, claims management, and modified/return-to-work programs.
  • Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite with the ability to analyze data, identify trends, and prepare reports.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build effective working relationships across all levels of the organization and with external stakeholders.
  • Strong organizational, problem-solving, and time-management skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Self-motivated and results-oriented, with the ability to work independently while promoting a strong safety culture and influencing safe workplace behaviors.

Nice To Haves

  • Current/Valid Health and safety certifications and training are considered an asset, including WHMIS, Working at Heights, Train-the-Trainer, and Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) Certification Training.
  • Canadian Registered Safety Profession (CRSP) or Certified Safety Professional Certification (CSP) is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and oversee all occupational health, safety, and environmental functions for the organization to ensure compliance with applicable legislation, regulations, and company standards.
  • Ensure compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSA), Environmental Protection Act, and other applicable government regulations, while maintaining alignment with company policies and procedures.
  • Act as the primary internal resource for all health, safety, and environmental matters, providing guidance and support to employees, supervisors, and management.
  • Coordinate, organize, and participate in all workplace safety initiatives, including Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC) meetings, ensuring legislative requirements and action items are completed.
  • Lead workplace accident, incident, injury, and near-miss investigations; identify root causes, recommend corrective actions, and monitor follow-up activities to prevent recurrence.
  • Conduct regular workplace inspections, hazard assessments, safety audits, and environmental reviews to identify risks and ensure corrective actions are implemented in a timely manner.
  • Monitor changes to occupational health, safety, and environmental legislation and proactively implement updates to maintain organizational compliance.
  • Develop, implement, maintain, and continuously improve health, safety, and environmental policies, procedures, programs, and related documentation.
  • Coordinate and deliver health, safety, and environmental orientation and training programs for new and existing employees and supervisors, including the development of training materials and education on workplace hazards, safe work practices, environmental requirements, and regulatory compliance.
  • Maintain and analyze health and safety metrics, incident statistics, compliance documentation, and monthly reporting to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.
  • Administer workplace injury reporting, claims management, and modified/return-to-work programs, ensuring timely follow-up and compliance with organizational and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate third-party audits, inspections, testing, and sampling related to health, safety, and environmental compliance, and maintain accurate records and certifications.
  • Maintain all required health, safety, environmental, training, and compliance documentation to support regulatory and internal audit readiness.
  • Maintain a regular presence on the production floor to promote employee engagement, identify hazards, reinforce safe work practices, and foster a proactive safety culture.
  • Promote and reinforce a strong “Safety First” culture across all departments to minimize workplace incidents, injuries, and environmental risks.
  • Perform other related duties and special projects as assigned.
