Requirements

  • An ability to interact positively with people of all ages and backgrounds, including patients and their loved ones, hospital staff, volunteers or members of the general public
  • An ability to communicate effectively
  • Good organizational abilities with a strong attention to detail
  • A knowledge of the skills important to customer service, event promotion and implementation, researching and delivering a creative project, and the willingness to learn and develop further knowledge and skills in these areas
  • Operation of Microsoft Office Products including Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, Publisher and Excel
  • High School graduation and completion of one year of a bachelor's degree program is required.

  • Preferred area of course concentration in hospital administration, business administration or public health or other closely related field.

Responsibilities

  • The incumbents assigned to this classification will be participants in an approved Internship program.
  • Participants of the program will contribute not only to the projects and departments in which they work, but to Duke Health as well.
  • Students are presented with an opportunity to build knowledge and skills in a health care setting with organizational responsibilities ranging from planning and policy analysis to program development and implementation.
  • Projects change from year to year, but are intended to provide students with a specific experience in hospital management while exposing them to the broader and sometimes complex aspects of hospital administration.
  • The specific nature of the internship will reflect the needs of the sponsoring organization, the learning goals of the student and the needs of the healthcare institution.
  • An effort is made to establish a reasonable balance between the interns learning goals and the specific work the organization requires.
  • Vice Presidents or other designated leadership within the Clinical Services Unit (CSU) or department will provide oversight during the internship experience.
  • Goals and expectations will be clearly defined at the initiation of the program.
  • Throughout the course of the internship, interns are assigned to one or more projects where they are responsible for a particular part of a deliverable(s).
  • Through interactions with the project team, interns will receive mentorship and support to help their success on the engagement.
  • At the end of the program, Interns have the opportunity to present their projects to senior leaders in the Health System.
  • The student will also provide feedback on the internship program and the leader(s)/preceptor will provide developmental feedback to the student.
