About The Position

The Head Volleyball Coach is responsible for coaching student athletes in the game strategies and techniques to prepare them for athletic competition. The position motivates student athletes to develop an appreciation for the sport.

Requirements

  • At least 6 months prior experience as a Coach at the High School/Middle School level, or any combination of experience working with youth or knowledge that provides the ability to perform the responsibilities of this position.
  • Before the beginning of the third year of coaching must complete a school district approved Coaching Principles training that requires a minimum of five (5) hours of instruction or complete the NFHS Coaches Fundamentals Course or attend all sessions of the WIAA Coaches School.
  • Annually complete the WIAA general rules clinic and the WIAA approved rule clinic for the sport being coached prior to the end of the third week of the sports season.
  • Possess a valid current First Aid Certification (or willing to obtain) or have completed a School District approved Athletic Training/Sports Medicine course equivalent to the Red Cross First Aid Card training or be enrolled in a First Aid Class.
  • Possess a valid current CPR Certification or be enrolled in and approved CPR C, it must be renewed every three years.
  • Have successfully completed Concussion recognition and management with Return to Play protocols and Sudden Cardiac Arrest Awareness trainings as required by Washington State Law that must be renewed every three (3) years.
  • Previous positive-coaching experience in football at the Middle or High School level.
  • Must have no history of child abuse or neglect.
  • Must have no history of drug or alcohol abuse.
  • Ability to complete a background check according to Yakama Nation Tribal School requirements.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment background check.
  • Required to pass a pre-employment drug test.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer community college and/or vocational school degree or higher with study in job related area.
  • Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities

  • Holds organizational meetings for the team prospects and encourages potential athletes to participate in the sport.
  • Connects with parents for concerns regarding student athletes' performance, playing time, etc.
  • Assesses players' skills and assigns team positions accordingly.
  • Develops a regular practice schedule and organizes practice time to provide for both individual and team development.
  • Works with the Athletic Director in scheduling facilities for practices and competitions.
  • Assigns duties to the Assistant Coach as necessary.
  • Coaches and instructs players, individually or in groups, regarding the rules, regulations, equipment, and technique in the sport.
  • Observes players during competition and practice to determine the needs for individual or team improvement.
  • Determines game strategy based on the team's capabilities.
  • Establishes and maintains standards of pupil behavior and provides proper supervision of athletes at all times.
  • Monitors the academic performance of the team members to ensure that eligibility requirements are met; and encourages student athletes to maintain a high academic standard.
  • Follows established procedures in the event of an athlete's injury.
  • Conferences with parents/guardians, as necessary, regarding the athletic performance of their students.
  • Follows state, regional, and district regulations governing the athletic program.
  • Models sport-like behavior and maintains appropriate conduct towards players, officials, and spectators.
  • Follows established procedures for proper care, maintenance, and requisitioning of equipment, supplies, and uniforms.
  • Participates in special activities to include parent's night, banquets, and pep assemblies.
  • Maintains eligibility forms, emergency data cards, equipment inventory, and other related records.
