About The Position

The Varsity Football Head Coach serves as the instructional and organizational leader of the district's high school football program. Under the direction of the Athletic Director, the Head Coach is responsible for developing and sustaining a comprehensive football program that emphasizes academic excellence, athletic achievement, leadership, integrity, and sportsmanship. The Head Coach provides vision and leadership for all levels of the football program by fostering a culture of respect, accountability, discipline, and teamwork. This position is responsible for planning and supervising all aspects of the varsity program, mentoring assistant coaches, promoting player development, and ensuring compliance with all district policies, conference regulations, and Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) rules.

Requirements

  • Previous successful coaching experience, preferably at the varsity or high school level.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of football fundamentals, strategy, player development, and program management.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and AED Certification (or ability to obtain before the season begins).
  • Completion of all MHSAA-required coaches education and certifications.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check and all district employment requirements.
  • Must meet all Michigan Department of Education and district coaching requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Provide leadership and oversight for all aspects of the varsity football program.
  • Develop, implement, and evaluate practice plans and game strategies.
  • Supervise, mentor, and evaluate assistant coaches.
  • Foster a positive culture emphasizes character, discipline, accountability, and teamwork.
  • Promote the academic success and personal development of student-athletes.
  • Coordinate and maintain effective communication with players, parents, staff, administration, officials, and community members.
  • Ensure compliance with all MHSAA rules, district policies, league regulations, and state requirements.
  • Maintain accurate inventory and accountability of athletic equipment and uniforms.
  • Assist with scheduling contests, transportation, facilities, and game-day operations in collaboration with the Athletic Director.
  • Work collaboratively with youth football programs to promote program continuity and development.
  • Monitor student-athlete eligibility and attendance requirements.
  • Encourage participation in offseason strength, conditioning, and skill development opportunities in accordance with MHSAA regulations.
  • Promote good sportsmanship and serve as a positive role model for student-athletes.
  • Attend athletic department meetings, coaches' meetings, and required professional development.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or Principal.
