About The Position

The Head Start Assistant Teacher I is responsible for assisting in the general operation of the classroom. This role involves ensuring a safe, nurturing, and engaging learning environment for up to 20 children, developing and implementing age-appropriate curriculum, and supporting children with diverse needs and backgrounds. The position also requires collaboration with families, colleagues, and community partners, as well as adherence to Head Start Performance Standards and licensing regulations.

Requirements

  • HS Diploma or GED required
  • At least 6 months experience working with children birth-five in a group setting required
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Must possess valid Level One Fingerprint Clearance Card or be able to obtain one prior to employment
  • Must pass a Central Registry Background Check, CAN State Registry Check, and Criminal History Check
  • Must have a valid Arizona Driver’s License and pass an Agency driver’s test
  • Must have a clean driving record for past 5 years

Responsibilities

  • Assumes responsibility for the supervision, care, and welfare of 20 classroom children to ensure their safety and well-being at all times.
  • Ensures a safe, nurturing, engaging, enjoyable, and secure learning environment.
  • Assists in developing, organizing, and implementing age-appropriate child education curriculum (Creative Curriculum for Preschool).
  • Assists in planning classroom and outdoor experiences that meet different developmental stages, interests, temperaments, learning styles, languages, and cultural backgrounds.
  • Assists in creating and implementing lesson plans that align with the Head Start Early Learning Outcomes Framework.
  • Assists in developing and implementing a multicultural curriculum that utilizes developmentally appropriate practices that meet the needs and interests of students.
  • Assists in effectively serving children with disabilities and their families, making appropriate adaptations for any disabilities and supporting IEP goal achievement. Participates in IEP discussions.
  • Supports Dual Language Learner teaching practices with a focus on English Language Acquisition and continued development of the home language.
  • Ensures compliance with all federal, state, and Office of Head Start Performance Standards regulations, Arizona licensing requirements, CACFP requirements, and program policies and procedures.
  • Respects, values, supports each child and family background and facilitates parent participation as equal partners in all aspects of the Educational Plans.
  • Develops and maintains positive relationships with each family, site team members, community agencies, community partners, and grantee staff members.
  • Assists in completing child-centered home visits and parent-teacher conferences for each enrolled child as required.
  • Assists in completing developmental and social-emotional screenings; ASQ and DECA for all children within 45 days of enrollment, and accurately documenting child health information.
  • Assists in completing regular and ongoing child assessments according to program guidelines and Learning Genie.
  • Always implements Active Supervision strategies, indoors and outdoors, following Active Supervision and Traveling Transition policies and procedures.
  • Establishes consistent rules and behavioral expectations and by using positive guidance methods.
  • Maintains a consistent yet flexible daily schedule where routines are established which enable children to predict events and develop a basic sense of trust.
  • Supports goals for individual children and ensures that individual plans are consistently implemented.
  • Completes all required forms and assigned paperwork including CACFP mealtime documentation.
