About The Position

The Head Start Assistant Teacher works alongside the Head Start Teacher to create an engaging learning environment for young children, supporting their curiosity and independence. The role also helps parents become strong advocates for their children and supports the Head Start program’s recruitment and enrollment efforts.

This is a full-time, 36-hour-per-week, 12-month union position based in Willmar, Minnesota. The assistant teacher helps plan classroom activities, maintains accurate records, leads health and nutrition activities, provides backup for the Head Start Teacher, assists with light janitorial duties, and monitors the Head Start bus and transports children to and from the center.

The salary range is $18.02–$26.76 per hour. The position is open to the public until filled.

Requirements

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• At least one year of experience working with children ages 3–5.
• Current Child Development Associate (CDA) credential or an early childhood degree, or ability to obtain one within two years.
• CPR and First Aid certification, or willingness to become certified.
• Computer skills.
• Ability to work as part of a team and independently.
• Reliability.
• Knowledge of child development, or willingness to learn.
• Problem-solving skills and ability to manage conflict.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with the Head Start Teacher to plan engaging and enriching classroom activities.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date records.
• Provide fun and creative health and nutrition activities in the classroom.
• Substitute for the Head Start Teacher when needed.
• Assist with light janitorial duties as necessary.
• Support Head Start recruitment and enrollment efforts.
• Safely monitor the Head Start bus and transport children to and from the center.
