About The Position

The Head Resident Assistant (HRA) facilitates the social, academic, and personal adjustment of students to the residence hall and University. The HRA develops a sense of community among residents as members of a floor, residents of a hall, and active participants in the residence life system. The HRA serves as a positive role model to residents and RAs and helps to provide oversight over the RAs. The HRA enforces the rules and policies of Residence Life, Housing, and the University. As an HRA, you must adhere to Residence Life’s and Texas Wesleyan’s Code of Student Conduct and the RA handbook. HRA positions are a one academic year appointment.

Requirements

  • Must adhere to Residence Life’s and Texas Wesleyan’s Code of Student Conduct and the RA handbook.
  • Must be available for on-call rotations, primarily on weeknights and weekends.
  • Must be able to address policy violations immediately and consistently while on-call.
  • Must be able to monitor residence hall conditions and report maintenance requests.
  • Must be able to assist in handling emergency situations.
  • Must be able to document policy violations or incidents.
  • Must be able to provide support and direction to RAs during emergencies.
  • Must model responsible, healthy, and mature behavior and habits.
  • Must comply with and support TxWes policies, procedures, and other applicable laws.
  • Must demonstrate excellent personal and professional judgment.
  • Must avoid situations that may compromise the credibility, integrity and/or reputation of the Residence Life department and/or the University.

Responsibilities

  • Create a positive and welcoming environment for all residents.
  • Maintain an atmosphere conducive to academic focus, self-discipline, and student success.
  • Build relationships (individually and in groups) with residents by being visible and available.
  • Work with campus and community partners through creating and implementing programs.
  • Encourage residents to be active participants in their communities.
  • Stay informed of resident concerns, serve as an advocate, and report concerns to a supervisor in a timely manner.
  • Develop, implement, and execute activities, late night programming, and learning initiatives for residents as a part of the Community Development Model.
  • Create and maintain up-to-date public space bulletin boards.
  • Assist with oversight of RA Programming at the Residence Life Coordinator’s discretion.
  • Assist with RA staff team development.
  • Complete job tasks and assignments thoroughly, appropriately, and in a timely manner.
  • Actively inform residents of pertinent academic and university information.
  • Assess the physical condition of rooms before and after occupancy, preparing and filing the appropriate form with the Residence Life Coordinator in a timely fashion.
  • Interpret and disseminate to the residents information and directives from Residence Life and Housing.
  • Assist in recruitment and selection of new RAs.
  • Assist in the supervision and evaluation of Resident Assistant staff at the discretion of the Residence Life Coordinator.
  • Work office hours at a location designated by the Residence Life Coordinator.
  • Co-facilitate weekly staff meetings.
  • Assist with planning and facilitating RA training including: Fall, Spring, and in-services.
  • Provide a supportive, educational, and self-exploratory campus environment through residential living.
  • Create an environment where the needs and concerns of students are appreciated.
  • Address any form of behavior unconducive to the residential living experience, whether verbal or written, physical or psychological, direct or implied, with the understanding that education is our primary goal.
  • Participate in on-call rotations consisting mostly of weeknights and weekends.
  • Address all policy violations immediately and consistently while on-call.
  • Monitor the residence hall conditions and report maintenance requests as necessary.
  • Assist, as requested, in the handling of all emergency situations (e.g. fire, health, safety).
  • Document any policy violations or incidents encountered while on-call.
  • Provide support and direction to the RAs as they confront and respond to emergency situations.
