About The Position

Deeter Analytics is a privately held investment research and trading firm managing its own capital across global public markets. The Head of Risk owns the firm’s risk process after positions are established and reports directly to the principal. This individual-contributor role is being built from scratch, with no team to manage, outside investors to report to, or inherited framework. The role is not a PM, trader, or quant seat; it does not set limits, run an independent investment view, or include responsibility for execution and position maintenance, which remain with the trading desk. The principal makes risk decisions. The role maintains a living map of the book, including each position’s rationale, exit conditions, and exposures by name, theme, and factor. It reviews positions daily against the firm’s current views, identifies stale, contradictory, mis-sized, unattended, or drifting exposures, and follows through on resolving them. It develops decision-oriented exposure and scenario views appropriate to the firm’s trading, and tracks counterparty, financing, and operational exposures across brokers and platforms. The Head of Risk defines the data and views needed for the risk function, specifies requirements for the tech team, and may prototype solutions using Python, SQL, or spreadsheets. The role also produces a concise daily note describing changes, stale positions, and decisions needed. The successful candidate is hands-on, self-directed, proportionate in allocating attention, comfortable with a fast-changing principal-led process, and fluent in using modern AI tools with verification of their output. The position is remote and works US market hours.

Requirements

  • Have performed this kind of risk role at a fund, family office, prop desk, or on the risk side of a bank, and have run a clean risk process.
  • Demonstrate careful judgment and attention to loose ends.
  • Understand positioning, derivatives, factor exposure, liquidity risk, and counterparty risk well enough to assess the exposures of a discretionary book.
  • Be comfortable with a principal who changes direction quickly and keep the book orderly within a fast-moving process.
  • Communicate plainly and support risk assessments with numbers.
  • Be low ego, truth-seeking, driven, quick to update when facts change, and comfortable raising concerns with an experienced principal.
  • Work self-directedly without an established limits framework or risk committee.
  • Be hands-on and perform the work personally each day.
  • Know how to specify, and ideally prototype, needed risk views using Python, SQL, or spreadsheets.
  • Distinguish material exposures from unnecessary process and allocate attention proportionately.
  • Use modern AI tools fluently with a trust-but-verify approach.
  • Maintain operating discipline, daily rhythm, durable documentation, and follow-through.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to prototype needed risk views using Python, SQL, or spreadsheets.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain a living inventory of every position, including its rationale, exit conditions, and exposures by name, theme, and factor.
  • Review positions daily against the firm’s current views and flag stale, contradictory, or mis-sized positions.
  • Identify and resolve unattended positions, residual pieces of old trades, and exposures that have drifted.
  • Develop exposure and scenario views suited to the firm’s trading and framed to support decisions by the principal.
  • Track counterparty, financing, and operational exposures across brokers and platforms alongside position exposures.
  • Define the data and risk views required and specify requirements for the tech team.
  • Produce a concise daily note covering what changed, what is stale, and what requires a decision.
  • Define and carry out the risk process independently, with daily hands-on work and follow-through on flags until resolved.
  • Work closely with the trading desk and tech team, operating at the speed of markets.
  • Use modern AI tools for surveillance, synthesis, and reporting while verifying their output.

Benefits

  • Direct line to the principal and a seat beside the decisions the work protects.
  • Well-capitalized firm with a distinctive approach to markets and a clean slate to define how risk works.
  • Small, discreet team that values intellectual honesty, independent judgment, and speed over hierarchy and process.
  • Upside tied to how much cleaner and better-protected the book is because of the role.
