Head of Quality Engineering

Onsetto, IncColumbus, OH
$90,000 - $140,000Onsite

About The Position

Onsetto is building a modern fintech company trusted by banks and financial institutions across the country. We believe enduring companies are built by people who take ownership, raise standards, focus on what matters most, measure outcomes clearly, execute with discipline, and lead with integrity. As we scale, quality cannot be an afterthought. It must be built into how we plan, design, develop, test, release, monitor, and improve our products. We are looking for a modern quality leader who can build and manage a testing function that helps Onsetto move faster with greater confidence. The Head of Quality Engineering will own Onsetto's testing strategy across product, engineering, release readiness, automation, vendor testing, and customer-impacting workflows. This person will manage Onsetto's relationship with Applause, coordinate external testing efforts, and partner deeply with Product and Engineering to build robust automated testing practices. The right candidate will understand that quality is not simply a final checkpoint before release. Quality is an operating system that must be embedded throughout the product development lifecycle. This role is ideal for someone who has led quality, QA, testing, or quality engineering functions in a modern software environment and knows how to combine structured testing, automation, exploratory testing, vendor management, and engineering partnership into a repeatable system.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of experience in quality assurance, quality engineering, test automation, software testing, or engineering delivery.
  • Prior experience managing a QA, QE, testing, or quality function.
  • Experience working in fintech, banking, payments, SaaS, regulated industries, or other high-reliability software environments.
  • Experience managing external testing vendors, crowdtesting partners, offshore QA teams, or third-party quality providers.
  • Familiarity with Applause or similar testing platforms and vendor-based testing models.
  • Strong understanding of modern automated testing practices.
  • Experience partnering with engineering teams on test automation, CI/CD, regression strategy, and release readiness.
  • Experience partnering with product teams on requirements, acceptance criteria, user flows, edge cases, and customer experience.
  • Strong understanding of defect lifecycle management, test planning, test case design, exploratory testing, regression testing, and production validation.
  • Ability to communicate quality risks clearly to engineering, product, operations, support, and executive stakeholders.
  • Strong judgment around when to automate, when to test manually, when to use vendors, and when to escalate release risk.
  • Test automation strategy.
  • API testing.
  • Integration testing.
  • End-to-end testing.
  • Regression testing.
  • Exploratory testing.
  • User acceptance testing.
  • CI/CD quality gates.
  • Test case management.
  • Defect tracking and triage.
  • Production validation and release readiness.
  • Observability-informed quality practices.
  • Performance, reliability, security, and accessibility testing coordination.
  • Vendor-managed testing programs.
  • Metrics such as escaped defects, defect aging, test coverage, automation reliability, regression cycle time, and release readiness.
  • Ownership: Take responsibility for quality outcomes, not just test execution.
  • Focus: Prioritize the workflows and risks that matter most to customers and the business.
  • Standards: Define what good testing, defect reporting, automation, and release readiness look like.
  • Execution: Build repeatable testing rhythms that help teams move quickly and safely.
  • Tracking: Make quality metrics, risks, and progress visible.
  • Tenacity: Stay steady when releases are complex, deadlines are tight, or defects are hard to reproduce.
  • Outcomes: Measure success by improved product quality, release confidence, and customer experience.
  • The ideal candidate can step into a growing fintech environment and create a quality function that is practical, modern, and trusted.
  • They know how to work with external partners like Applause, but they do not outsource ownership of quality.
  • They know how to push Engineering toward stronger automation without turning testing into bureaucracy.
  • They know how to help Product think through edge cases, acceptance criteria, and customer impact earlier in the process.
  • This person should be structured, collaborative, metrics-driven, and comfortable operating across teams.
  • They should bring enough technical fluency to earn credibility with engineers and enough product judgment to understand what quality means to customers.

Nice To Haves

  • Thinks QA is only a final testing phase before release.
  • Measures success only by the number of test cases written or bugs logged.
  • Has limited experience partnering directly with engineering teams.
  • Is uncomfortable with test automation or modern CI/CD practices.
  • Wants to outsource quality entirely to a vendor.
  • Avoids difficult conversations about release risk.
  • Creates heavy process without improving outcomes.
  • Waits for Product or Engineering to define quality instead of helping lead it.
  • Prefers manual testing as the default answer for every problem.

Responsibilities

  • Own Onsetto's overall quality engineering and testing strategy.
  • Manage the relationship with Applause, including test planning, scope, execution, reporting, feedback loops, and vendor performance.
  • Partner with Product and Engineering to define test strategy early in the product development lifecycle.
  • Build a modern testing function that includes manual testing, exploratory testing, regression testing, automated testing, integration testing, and release readiness.
  • Establish clear standards for test plans, acceptance criteria, defect reporting, regression coverage, and release signoff.
  • Work with engineering teams to improve automated test coverage across critical workflows.
  • Help define what should be tested at the unit, integration, API, end-to-end, and user acceptance levels.
  • Create visibility into quality metrics, defect trends, escaped defects, test coverage, release risk, and production impact.
  • Ensure high-risk workflows receive appropriate test depth before launch.
  • Partner with Product to ensure requirements and acceptance criteria are testable, complete, and clear.
  • Partner with Engineering to make testing faster, more reliable, and more integrated into CI/CD and release processes.
  • Coordinate internal and external testers to ensure feedback is timely, actionable, and well-prioritized.
  • Improve defect triage, reproduction quality, prioritization, and closure discipline.
  • Support post-release reviews and help identify root causes of quality issues.
  • Build repeatable processes that help Onsetto scale without slowing down delivery.

Benefits

  • This is an opportunity to build a modern testing function from the ground up, shape how Onsetto ships software, and help create a culture where speed and quality reinforce each other.
