Head of Product Design

AmplitudeSan Francisco, CA
$285,000 - $476,000Remote

About The Position

Amplitude is looking for a strong design leader with a builder mindset to lead a 15-person design team through the next phase of growth. This is a player-coach role where you will manage and grow the team, while also staying involved in the actual work by elevating quality through feedback, pairing with designers on challenging UX puzzles, and asking the right questions to unlock the crux of the problem. You will need to understand every product surface well enough to raise its quality, even if you don't own any single one end-to-end. The role involves maintaining speed without compromising on coherence and quality as designers are embedded in autonomous pods and need to keep shipping fast.

Requirements

  • Managed senior, independent IC designers and earned their respect through product and craft judgment.
  • Shipped products that moved real customer and business metrics, fast.
  • Created structure inside of a messy, high-growth organization.
  • Shipped AI-native experiences and use AI tools in your own practice today.
  • Portfolio shows both systems-level thinking and pixel-level craft.

Nice To Haves

  • Designed for both technical and non-technical users, and can hold that tension without compromising the experience for either.
  • Experience with Analytics, Experimentation, or Developer tools.

Responsibilities

  • Build the team: Hire, grow, and retain a high-performing design team, identifying people who will thrive and raise the bar at Amplitude. Develop them through direct, specific feedback and help them overcome challenges.
  • Set direction: Drive the design strategy for Amplitude's product suite, including Core Amplitude, Statsig, and Wave. Help define how AI agents and humans collaborate within workflows.
  • Champion craft: Lead by example in elevating the quality of the product through exceptional design execution, focusing on visual design to build trust, clarity, and delight in the AI era.
  • Hold a high bar: Set and enforce clear standards for design quality without becoming an approval bottleneck, especially as AI makes UI changes cheaper and can lead to quality erosion.
  • Stay in production: Focus on the shipped product, pushing on details, papercuts, and edge cases to ensure high quality.
  • Speak for the customer: Represent the customer's voice in leadership conversations, advocating for solutions that meet their needs and reduce complexity.
