About The Position

This position is a senior-level finance leader responsible for managing all accounting and financial reporting functions across multiple business functions (Cash, Accrual, Statutory, U.S. GAAP and Tax) within four diverse teams organized by our key entities (ALFP LLC; ALSC; Reinsurers; SENECA RE). This position ensures accurate financial statements, reinsurance settlements, STAT to GAAP to Tax reconciliations, supports and updates internal controls with changing risks found by ERM, and ensures compliance with accounting standards, reinsurance treaties, and regulatory requirements. This role interfaces directly with internal and external auditors and plays a key role in driving consistency, efficiency, and transparency across all entities and serves as a strategic partner to executive leadership.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, and MBA preferred.
  • CPA, CGMA or CMA certification required.
  • Minimum of 10 years of progressive accounting and financial reporting experience.
  • 2-5 years Big 4 and/or Annuity carrier experience strongly preferred
  • Insurance industry experience required (STAT, GAAP, Retail Annuities, Reinsurance)
  • At least 3 years in a leadership role overseeing team accounting in a multi-entity or multi-business environment.
  • Experience with complex tax, consolidations, inter-company accounting, and reporting across different industries or sectors is preferred.
  • Prior experience with ERP systems and financial reporting tools. Oracle ™ and DataBricks ™ a plus.
  • Deep understanding of Annuity reinsurance (MODCO, CO FEH, Trusts), U.S. STAT and GAAP and financial reporting standards.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage complexity and prioritize in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • High attention to detail with strong analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Experience leading system implementations or process automation projects is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, own, run and improve the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process with a focus on actionable Statutory income, capital & surplus, GAAP, tax, cash/accrual. Move to a hard close for all aspects of financial and statistical data (footnotes).
  • Set a clear, engaging, and inspiring future state regulatory reporting and analysis data, business outcomes, IT application, and IT infrastructure with Oracle ™ at the core of technology stack.
  • Lead the preparation of STAT, GAAP and reinsurance consolidated monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements for the organization, reinsurance captives, rating agency and other customers.
  • Proactive outreach to internal and external customers. Demonstrate understanding of levers and drivers. Collaborate with FP&A to link actuals to plan, budget, and forecasts.
  • Staff, manage and QA/QC all preventative, detective, and corrective controls across the end-to-end ecosystem. Work with IT to evolve manual detective controls into automated preventative controls.
  • Redesign and build ORACLE ™ Account Reconciliation Cloud Service (”ARCS”) to link ledger to sub ledgers, improve aging of accounts/transactions and consistent application of the corporate reconciliation policy. Train users to both reconcile and certify quarterly results.
  • Manage the preparation of internal management reports, including variance analysis and other key performance indicators. Make robust analytics a Key Control of the close process.
  • Ensure that all financial reporting is accurate, complete, and submitted on time. Identify, build, and deploy process improvements for a 10% efficiency gain quarterly in year 1.
  • Ensure all reporting complies with NAIC Statutory Accounting Policy & Procedure manuals, U.S. GAAP, FASB, NE and VT regulations and other organizational contracts (e.g., reinsurance treaties, loan covenants, etc.).
  • Review and analyze financial results across the ALFP LLC holding company, life insurers, and reinsurance captives to identify trends, issues, and opportunities.
  • Prepare and present reporting packages to senior leadership and external stakeholders – including “camera ready” audit committee and Board slide with Head of FP&A
  • Oversee the accounting operations (cash, accrual, STAT, GAAP, TAX) by entity, product, and reinsurance treaty segment (MODCO, CO FWH, Trust), ensuring standardization and accuracy across each with business analytics.
  • Ideate, curate, and iterate MOR (monthly operating Report) and QMR (Quarterly Management Report) for internal and external customers. Hold routine earnings and surplus meetings to actively solicit questions and feedback.
  • Lead the Oracle general ledger, Oracle EPM ARCS and FCCS module implementation, fixed assets, 1099, Accounts Payable, Asset manager revenue recognition, and account reconciliation and certification processes.
  • Ensure efficient inter-company eliminations, allocations, and consolidations for multi-entity operations. Automate minority interest and eliminations in Oracle FCCS.
  • Coordinate and refine the Oracle ™ chart of accounts – grounded in NAIC statutory Accounting Policy & Procedures Manual. Bifurcate cash from common accruals to close common ledger BD minus 5.
  • Strategy and vision of future state Ledger, Databricks ™ data warehouses, statistical uploads for alignment with operational and financial reporting needs across the enterprise (treasury ops, investment ops, reinsurance, investment accounting)
  • Direct and manage the month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close processes to ensure timely and accurate results.
  • Review journal entries, account reconciliations, accruals, and financial schedules across business units.
  • Establish and maintain a close calendar and deliverables timeline.
  • Ensure compliance with accounting regulations, tax laws, and financial reporting requirements.
  • Develop, implement, and check internal controls over financial reporting for all entities.
  • Coordinate and manage external audits, including preparing supporting documentation and addressing auditor inquiries.
  • Lead and develop a team of accounting and financial reporting professionals.
  • Provide training, coaching, and performance feedback to ensure high-quality work and continuous growth.
  • Establish metrics, goals, and benchmarks for the accounting department to enable the staff to successfully reach and sustain desired results.
  • Promote a collaborative and accountable team culture – especially with NYC reinsurance and investment front office.
  • Build, with appropriate consultants, an ALSC tax strategy to optimize Total Adjusted Capital (TAC).
  • Create and maintain enterprise-wide STAT, GAAP and Tax accounting policies and procedures. Augment for key risk areas detailed DTPs and SOPs at the operational level.
  • Drive consistency in accounting practices across all business units. Define data and capability gaps preventing an actionable monthly close.
  • Serve as a technical STAT, GAAP and TAX accounting resource and guide the organization through complex accounting issues common to high growth / start up annuity and private investing firms.
  • Support the head of Finance Systems Transformation through all end-to-end value stream implementations, integrations, and upgrades across business units and CFO teams.
  • Identify and implement process improvements to increase efficiency and accuracy in reporting and accounting operations.
  • Ensure systems are scalable and aligned with future business growth.
  • Serve as a key advisor to the Controller, head of FP&A, head of Investments, CFO and executive team, providing financial analysis and insight to support Audit Committee and Board meetings, rating agencies, strategic initiatives, service line expansions, and capital planning.
  • Provide financial insights to support operational decisions provide financial insights and recommendations to drive business strategy and decision-making.
  • Communicate complex financial information clearly and effectively to both financial and non-financial stakeholders.
  • Provide guidance on budgeting, forecasting, and financial modeling to support company goals.
  • Collaborate with Operations, FP&A, Treasury, and Legal / Compliance departments to ensure alignment and accurate reporting.
