About The Position

The Head of East Zone, Primary Casualty will lead, manage, maintain and develop an Underwriting unit to profitably achieve Primary Casualty North America’s strategic and financial objectives in compliance with established policies and guidelines. This includes the underwriting of Workers’ Compensation, General Liability, and Automobile Liability coverage lines of business, predominantly on a loss sensitive basis. The role holder manages an underwriting territory to meet P&L budgetary requirements and performance metrics for the specific territory as well as supporting AXA XL’s overall regional objectives. The role holder must possess broad technical expertise across many classes of business and may personally handle the more complex risks within the territory. They have and maintain extensive contacts with major insureds, retail agents and brokers throughout the Eastern Zone and nationally. The role holder directly leads a team of Underwriters and coordinates with support staff facilitating professional development of skills, knowledge and competencies across the unit. The Head of Eastern Zone, Primary Casualty joins the Americas Casualty Leadership team and is involved in setting the overall Casualty strategy with other LT members. The role holder supports AXA XL’s cross-sell objectives by understanding capabilities across other lines of business, and maintaining open communication with colleagues in other departments. This role reports to the Chief Underwriting Officer, Casualty, Americas.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; professional designations CPCU, ARM preferred.
  • Extensive Casualty Underwriting experience required exhibiting a broad knowledge of casualty lines of business: WC, GL, AL and Umbrella; reinsurance concepts and business processes.
  • Experience managing, developing, and recruiting high caliber underwriting teams
  • Established robust broker relationships
  • Robust technical background with the ability to present and negotiate complex agreements
  • Excellent collaboration and influencing skills
  • Self-Motivated with the ability to work self-supported.
  • Ability to respond to a changing environment with flexibility and innovation.

Responsibilities

  • Execute departmental strategy and achieve P&L metrics including est. on a portfolio exceeding GWP of $150MM.
  • Manage and develop a high-performing underwriting team, fostering a culture of excellence, innovation, and customer-centricity within the zone.
  • Leverage your deep network of major insureds, retail agents and brokers relationships within the region to drive business growth and achieve strategic objectives. Utilize your established relationships effectively to expand business opportunities.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including claims, risk engineering, credit finance, and sales/distribution to ensure cohesive service delivery and reinforce our value proposition.
  • Continuously analyze portfolio performance, identify areas for improvement, and implement changes to refine the regional risk profile, ensuring sustainable growth and profitability.
  • Execute corporate and departmental strategy with the ability to identify and utilize KPIs to drive underwriting profitability and manage results.
  • Manage insured and producer relationships across a large geographic territory.
  • Maintain and increase visibility in the market by aggressively marketing to insureds and retail agents and brokers.
