About The Position

Atticus is seeking its first Head of Communications to establish its media presence and influence stakeholder understanding of the company and its impact. This role will own corporate communications and public relations, reporting to the Chief Marketing Officer. The position will build a communications program focused on data journalism and policy-driven storytelling, particularly concerning the Social Security Administration (SSA). The Head of Communications will partner with the Head of Policy and Public Affairs on public affairs initiatives, including Washington fly-ins, Congressional events, and building media relationships to influence policy conversations. This is a builder role where the individual will design and build the communications function, leveraging a strong strategic foundation, proprietary data, and client stories.

Requirements

  • 10+ years in communications, with significant experience in a policy-adjacent environment (advocacy, government, regulated industry, mission-driven consumer brand, or serving such clients).
  • Proven track record of earned media wins driven by data and original insight, not just relationships.
  • Experience organizing fly-ins, staging Congressional events, and working with Hill staff.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, capable of producing various communication materials.
  • Ability to quarterback cross-functional efforts across agencies, Legal, Policy, executives, and Growth.
  • Fluency in government affairs, understanding of how Congress and federal agencies operate.
  • Genuine compassion for the people served by Atticus.
  • Comfort in a performance-driven, data-first culture.

Responsibilities

  • Set the communications strategy, core messages, and a 12-month editorial calendar to grow Atticus's media coverage.
  • Build the operational infrastructure for communications.
  • Develop a public relations program to secure consistent media placement in outlets that shape public and policymaker perception.
  • Transform data into compelling stories for reporters.
  • Build the capability for rapid response to policy news, including commentary, data, spokespeople, and op-eds.
  • Partner with the Public Affairs and Advocacy team to design and execute Washington D.C. fly-ins and support Congressional events.
  • Own execution positioning for the CEO and leadership team, thought leadership platforms, and crisis preparedness.
  • Manage PR and public affairs agencies.
  • Collaborate with Policy, Legal, Product, and Growth teams to ensure external voice reflects the company.
  • Oversee the operational infrastructure for PR and Comms, including media strategy, content calendar, approval workflows, messaging frameworks, and performance measurement.
  • Hire and develop the communications team as the function grows.
