Head of Claims

Vouch InsuranceSan Francisco, CA
$165,000 - $190,000Remote

About The Position

Claims is where clients feel the value of a broker most acutely. A great claims advocate can turn a stressful situation into a defining moment of trust, and that trust drives retention, referrals, and long-term client value. Today, Vouch doesn’t have a dedicated claims function. We’re building one from scratch, and we’re doing it differently. This is not a traditional claims hire. We’re looking for someone who will build an AI-native claims function, partnering closely with our Applied AI team to design, manage, and orchestrate AI agents that make this the highest-leverage claims operation in the industry. You’ll combine deep domain expertise with a genuine drive to push the boundaries of what one person can accomplish when they have the right tools. The goal is a one-person function by design, not by accident, with AI doing the heavy lifting on triage, drafting, analysis, and tracking so you can focus on the relationships and judgment calls that actually move outcomes.

Requirements

  • 8+ years of claims experience across management liability, professional liability, cyber, and/or other commercial lines relevant to technology and life sciences companies
  • Deep, active network across carrier claims leadership, coverage counsel, and broker claims advocacy peers
  • Track record of personally managing complex, high-severity claims where the outcome mattered to the business
  • Credible and composed in front of founders, GCs, CFOs, and boards; someone clients want in the room when things are hard
  • Strong commercial instincts; you understand claims not just as a service function but as a driver of new business, retention, and carrier leverage
  • Genuinely excited about AI and building an AI-native function; you see tools like Claude as force multipliers, not threats, and you want to be on the frontier of what’s possible
  • Comfortable operating as a one-person function, with strong judgment about when to escalate and when to resolve directly
  • Ability to design process and structure from scratch without needing a large team or heavy infrastructure
  • Client-obsessed, high integrity, and motivated by outcomes over optics

Nice To Haves

  • JD, CPCU, ARM, RPLU, or equivalent professional credential
  • Prior experience in a brokerage, insurer, or law firm serving venture-backed or innovation-economy clients
  • Leadership experience building or re-designing a claims function at a brokerage or carrier
  • Experience representing an organization externally at industry events, with media, or with regulators
  • Exposure to and passion for early-stage startups and/or high-growth environments

Responsibilities

  • Own the end-to-end claims advocacy experience for Vouch clients, from first notice of loss through resolution
  • Partner with the Applied AI team to design and orchestrate AI agents for claims triage, coverage analysis, client communication, and carrier follow-up
  • Continuously identify opportunities to automate and improve claims workflows, building the playbook for what an AI-native claims function looks like at scale
  • Design a tiered service model: notification-only on simple claims, guided advocacy on most matters, full hands-on management for complex, high-stakes situations
  • Act as the senior advocate and escalation point on material claims, engaging carrier claims teams, defense counsel, and clients’ executive and legal leadership directly
  • Build and maintain strong relationships across the carrier claims community to drive better outcomes for Vouch clients
  • Partner with Placements and Client Management to turn claims insight into better coverage, pricing, and renewal outcomes
  • Translate claims data into a clear point of view on loss trends, coverage gaps, and carrier performance to inform placement and product strategy
  • Be a credible, expert voice in new-business conversations and major-client retention moments where claims capability is a deciding factor
  • Partner with the CEO, COO, and General Counsel on claims-related risk and escalation decisions
  • Represent Vouch externally at industry events, with carriers, and with sophisticated client counsel

Benefits

  • Competitive compensation and equity packages
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Parental leave
  • Flexible vacation time
  • Wellness allowance
  • Technology allowance
  • Company-sponsored personal and professional development
  • L&D: Partnerships with Ethena and monthly Lunch & Learns
  • Wellbeing: access to many wellbeing perks, including Peloton, Fetch, OneMedical, Headspace care+, etc.
  • Caregiver Support: company seed into the dependent care FSA and company sponsored Care.com membership.
  • Regular performance reviews: Vouch conducts regular performance discussions with all team members, offering goal setting and check-ins, development discussions, and promotion opportunities.
