Head of Claims

Sola InsuranceAtlanta, GA
$190,000 - $240,000Onsite

About The Position

Sola Insurance is an Atlanta-based insurtech MGA that is expanding its offerings from standalone parametric wind and hail insurance to a full homeowners product. This role is a builder position responsible for creating a unified claims function to serve both existing parametric and new traditional indemnity products. The Head of Claims will own the entire claims lifecycle, from initial contact to closure, and will be accountable for key performance metrics such as cycle time, loss adjustment expense, leakage, litigation rate, and customer satisfaction. This includes integrating parametric and indemnity claims processes, selecting and managing a Third-Party Administrator (TPA), establishing internal First Notice of Loss (FNOL) capabilities, and developing a catastrophe response strategy. The role also involves setting a customer-centric tone for claims handling, managing carrier delegated authority, building claims reserving practices, and implementing claims technology. The Head of Claims will represent the company externally to carriers, reinsurers, and regulators, and will build the vendor panel beyond the TPA, partnering with legal on disputes. This is a critical role where claims are considered the product, central to the company's success.

Requirements

  • 10+ years of property claims experience, with deep homeowners and wind/hail expertise.
  • Experience owning a claims lifecycle end to end.
  • Experience managing or auditing TPAs and improving their performance.
  • Experience running an RFP and negotiating TPA contracts.
  • Experience building or scaling a claims operation: workflows, guidelines, hiring, QA.
  • CAT response experience, ideally leading field response for wind/hail events.
  • Fluency in claims economics: LAE ratios, severity trends, cycle time drivers, leakage.
  • Working knowledge of fraud indicators and SIU practices.
  • Comfortable as a player-coach in a startup environment.
  • Genuine curiosity about how parametric and indemnity claims fit together, and the ability to reason from first principles about trigger design and basis risk.
  • Possession of an adjuster license across operating states, or willingness to obtain one shortly after starting.

Nice To Haves

  • MGA experience.

Responsibilities

  • Own the full claims lifecycle end to end across both parametric and indemnity products: FNOL through payment, subrogation, and closure.
  • Be accountable for cycle time, loss adjustment expense, leakage, litigation rate, and customer satisfaction across the whole book.
  • Bring parametric and indemnity claims processes together into one experience, including how the two interact when a payout and an indemnity claim come from the same loss event.
  • Lead TPA selection for the new homeowners product end to end, from RFP through contract negotiation, and manage the TPA with defined SLAs, audits, and file reviews.
  • Stand up internal FNOL from scratch, serving both products: staffing, scripts, escalation paths.
  • Own CAT response strategy for a book concentrated in wind and hail.
  • Decide what stays with the TPA and what comes in-house, and build the migration roadmap.
  • Set the tone for customer-centric claims: fast, fair, and accurate communication.
  • Operate inside carrier delegated authority and protect/grow it.
  • Build claims reserving practices from the ground up with the Head of Insurance.
  • Bring real claims technology into the mix: imagery, weather data, AI-assisted triage, fraud analytics.
  • Partner with underwriting and product on coverage language and loss trends.
  • Represent claims to carriers, reinsurers, and regulators.
  • Own DOI complaint responses and market conduct readiness.
  • Build the vendor panel beyond the TPA: engineers, defense counsel, mitigation and restoration partners.
  • Partner with legal on coverage disputes and litigated files.
