About The Position

Oversee the entire operation of the Adult Services (AS) department including patron service, reference and reader’s advisory service, collection development, cataloguing, planning, promoting and delivery of programming for adult-age patrons. Also responsible for hiring, training, supervising, and scheduling AS staff. Uphold the Whitefish Bay Public Library Mission Statement set by the Library Board and provide services that meet those standards.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited school
  • At least 3 years of Library experience
  • At least 1 year of supervisory experience
  • Some customer service experience
  • Some website management experience
  • Some marketing experience
  • Ability to adapt to evolving technology.
  • Ability to communicate tactfully and effectively with the public and staff.
  • Ability to complete detailed work accurately, efficiently, and on time, with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to create and maintain positive and effective public relations.
  • Ability to exercise initiative in problem-solving and refer questionable situations to the Director.
  • Ability to operate all items under Tools and Equipment Used.
  • Ability to perform supervisory functions and organize workflow.
  • Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize work assignments.
  • Ability to work independently or as part of a team.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong technology skills to include: Microsoft Windows and Office applications, Canva, Google Suite applications, and the internet.
  • Thorough knowledge of Library methods and procedures.
  • Willingness and ability to work a flexible schedule that includes days, evenings and weekends to meet service level.
  • May need to cover absences for staff members.

  • Knowledge of Milwaukee County Federated Library System and shared automation systems.
  • Experience with current MCFLS ILS system.

Responsibilities

  • As part of the Library’s Leadership Team attend and contribute to Leadership Team meetings, typically held weekly, to collaborate, plan changes. work to implement the Library Board approved Strategic Plan. present to the Library Board at Board meetings as needed.
  • Maintain a professional demeanor along with excellent communication skills that contribute to the overall well-being of the workplace. Cultivate and maintain positive working relationships.
  • Consult with Library Director regarding policies and procedures; keep Library Director apprised of AS schedule, procedural modifications.
  • Develop and monitor AS budget. Determine budgetary needs for AS department and make recommendations for new initiatives.
  • Gather and report data on the functions and services of the AS department monthly. Report on relevant projects, programs, staff updates.
  • Develop short- and long-range plans for AS Department in keeping with broader Strategic Plan.
  • Oversee day-to-day service and activities in the AS department.
  • Plan and run AS staff meetings. Inform all staff about changes/updates/additions in the AS department.
  • Hire, train, supervise, and coach AS staff to achieve Library and staff goals and objectives.
  • Complete annual reviews of AS staff.
  • Uphold and implement all policies established by the Board of Trustees.
  • Articulate WFBPL and MCFLS policy to the public and staff.
  • Lead AS team in instructing patrons on how to use current technology systems. providing reference and reader’s advisory assistance. developing and implementing programs. managing AS collection. scheduling and managing Library displays.
  • Create and emphasize a positive, welcoming and helpful environment for Library users and maintain a level of excellent service.
  • Provide reference and reader’s advisory service.
  • Supervise the Library’s meeting room reservations.
  • Handle patron issues cordially and effectively and transfer or refer to correct source as needed.
  • Remain calm under pressure.
  • Work cooperatively with the Head of Circulation Services and other MCFLS libraries to solve patron and material issues.
  • Maintain confidentiality of Library patron information.
  • Plan, implement and evaluate AS department programs.
  • Stay current on technology trends and incorporate new developments into the Library’s programs and services.
  • Collaborate with Youth Services department for all-ages and family programming (ex. photography contest).
  • Collaborate with Whitefish Bay organizations and groups on mutually beneficial programming opportunities.
  • Lead the selection/deselection and ordering adult collection materials, either directly or via delegation.
  • Develop and maintain a collection that contains a variety of formats that serve current needs, while also planning for future needs.
  • Develop materials budget, oversee expenses, confer with Director on budget status.
  • Advise and instruct processing staff about changes/additions to Adult materials.
  • Utilizing the most recent Library Marketing Plan, oversees all public relations.
  • Responsible for the Library website, social media accounts, newsletters, and other related platforms.
  • Coordinates the publicity efforts of other staff members.
  • Maintain a commitment to continuous learning to grow professionally and improve skills through relevant committee work, conferences, seminars, and local training sessions.
  • Read professional literature and remain current with trends in Library service and application to WFBPL.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.
