About The Position

Under general supervision, assist the board in the fair and just discharge of its obligation to students and staff through performance of the Head Coach role over and beyond the duties of a classroom teacher. Reports to the school principal and athletic director. This role requires thorough knowledge of all the Athletic Policies approved by the Catawba County Schools Board of Education and is responsible for its implementation by the entire staff of the sports program. The coach must also be knowledgeable of existing school system, state, and conference regulations and implement them consistently. The position involves establishing the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff, designing conferences, clinics, and staff meetings, and training and informing staff while encouraging professional growth. The coach will delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate assistants at the end of the season. Maintaining discipline, adjusting grievances, and working to increase morale and cooperation are key aspects of this role. The coach will also assist the Athletic Director in scheduling, providing transportation, and handling requirements for tournament and special sport events, as well as preparing for scheduled sport events or practices and adhering to scheduled facility times. Coordination with maintenance and school employees, providing necessary documentation for state and system requirements, and ensuring proper safeguards for equipment and sites are also responsibilities. The coach will advise the Athletic Director and recommend policy, method, or procedural changes. Providing training rules and unique regulations of the sport to each athlete, giving constant attention to a student athlete’s grades and conduct, and being present at all practices and games are essential. The coach will provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant, initiate programs and policies concerning injuries, medical attention, and emergencies, and complete and submit proper paperwork on all disabling athletic injuries within 24 hours. Directing student managers, assistants, and statisticians, determining discipline, delineating procedures concerning due process, and contacting parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible are also part of the role. Assisting athletes in their college or advanced educational selection and participating in the budgeting function with the Athletic Director are required. The coach will recommend guidelines for equipment and operate within budget appropriations, being accountable for all equipment and collecting fees for lost or unreturned items. Arranging for issuing, storing, and reconditioning of equipment, submitting annual inventory and current records, and properly marking and identifying all equipment are necessary. Monitoring equipment rooms and coaches’ offices, authorizing access, and permitting athletes in authorized areas only at appropriate times are also duties. Examining locker rooms before and after practices and games, ensuring general cleanliness, and being responsible for the cleanliness and maintenance of specific sport equipment are required. Securing all doors, lights, windows, and locks before leaving the building if custodians are not on duty is also a responsibility. Instilling in each player a respect for equipment and school property, its care and proper use, organizing parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre-season meetings, and promoting the sport within and outside the school are key functions. The coach is responsible for the quality, effectiveness, and validity of any oral or written release to local media and for maintaining good public relations with news media, Booster Club, parents, officials, volunteers, and fans. Presenting information to news media concerning schedules, tournaments, and results, and performing other duties as assigned by the school Principal are also part of the role.

Requirements

  • Administrative and organizational skills.
  • Thorough knowledge of Catawba County Schools athletic policy and procedure.
  • Thorough knowledge of the North Carolina Administrative Code and Statutes.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, staff, parents, and the community.
  • Meet requirements established by the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction, the Catawba County Board of Education, and school administration.
  • Previous successful coaching experience in assigned sport.

  • Teacher license and employment as a teacher by the Catawba County Board of Education is strongly preferred.
