About The Position

SUNY Sullivan is a community college offering over 40 degree programs, certificates, and micro-credentials. The Department of Athletics aims to provide an effective learning experience for student-athletes through competitive NJCAA Division III Athletics, fostering personal growth, leadership, responsible citizenship, and teamwork. The Head Men's Basketball Coach is responsible for the overall operation and recruiting of the NJCAA Division III Men's Basketball program, including student retention and program administration. This position reports to the Director of Athletics and requires evening and weekend hours as needed.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Physical Education, Sports Management, Recreation, or a related field.
  • Experience coaching soccer and/or athletic administration, preferably at the collegiate level.
  • A valid NYS Driver's License.
  • Proficiency using MS Office software.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with students, athletes, staff, faculty, alumni, administrators, and parents.
  • Ability to inspire achievement and leadership among students, athletes, and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Direct and coordinate the planning, organizing, and coaching of the SUNY Sullivan Men's Basketball program, including the Junior Varsity Team.
  • Coordinate all basketball-related duties, including recruitment of players, team practice, and game management at the scholarship level.
  • Direct and coordinate the activities of the Men's Basketball staff, ensuring compliance with College, NJCAA, Region XV, and Mid-Hudson Conference policies and regulations.
  • Direct the basketball staff in preparation and analysis of opponent teams, including game statistics and tactical data, and prepare game plans accordingly.
  • Assign and supervise the Basketball staff in the recruitment of new players and determine recipients of scholarships in conjunction with the Interim/Director of Athletics.
  • Provide leadership and instruction in the personal and athletic development of student/athletes.
  • Counsel team members in academic, disciplinary, and personal matters, consulting with College administration and faculty for problem resolution.
  • Work closely with appropriate parties for the care and prevention of athletic injuries and support the overall drug and alcohol education program for student-athletes.
  • Determine fiscal requirements and prepare budgetary recommendations; monitor, verify, and reconcile expenditures of budgeted funds.
  • Direct personnel functions including hiring, performance appraisals, promotions, and schedules of the Men's PT Basketball Staff, and make recommendations to the Athletic Director for assistant coaches and managers.
  • Supervise coaching and managerial staff of the Men's Basketball team, including the full JV program.
  • Study, evaluate, and implement innovations in Basketball strategy and equipment.
  • Assist players in the recruitment and transition to the 4-year collegiate or professional level.
  • Represent SUNY Sullivan Department of Athletics in professional, civic, charity, and alumni events.
  • Assist in the implementation and management of a summer sports camp program.
  • Function as a coordinating liaison with the Admissions Office, Dormitory Corporation, Learning Center, Financial Aid Office, and other campus offices to facilitate each student-athlete's transition to college life.
  • Assist the Athletic Director in the implementation of an academic monitoring program for basketball student-athletes and supervise mandatory study hall programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
