About The Position

The Salvation Army Camp Kuratli at Trestle Glen is seeking a Head Lifeguard to coordinate a safe and fun swimming pool experience while preserving camp adherence to state and local operating procedures and overseeing assistant lifeguards and/or other lifeguards. This is a temporary, seasonal, full-time position from June 16 to August 15, 2025.

Requirements

  • Minimum High School Graduate or equivalent required.
  • 2 seasons of summer camp experience or 1 year in equivalent work required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Capable of obtaining Oregon Food Handlers card.
  • Must have current standard Red Cross or equitant lifeguard certification.
  • Must have current AED, CPR, and first aid certifications.
  • Be a Christian with a strong, demonstrative commitment to following Jesus Christ, and biblical principles, who is enthusiastic, energetic, and creative in spiritual leadership.
  • Good character, integrity, and adaptability.
  • Detail-oriented, Self-starter, Team Player.
  • Ability to diffuse stressful situations with staff and campers.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and be comfortable working with a high degree of independence.
  • Possess leadership skills, with the ability to supervise, care for, and provide necessary guidance for staff and campers 24 hours a day.
  • Possess leadership skills, with the ability to plan, organize, and execute programs.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and maintain poise under pressure.
  • Ability to read, write, and communicate well in the English language.
  • Visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards at all times.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Acceptable driving record.
  • Must pass a motor vehicle record check and the TSA Motor Vehicle training.
  • Must pass a criminal history information check.
  • Qualified individuals must be able to perform essential duties of the position with or without accommodation.
  • An understanding of professional boundaries is required.

Responsibilities

  • Foster and nurture Christian faith and discipleship in visible, fruitful ways to, and with staff and campers.
  • Provide supervision, support, and motivation to all staff.
  • May be required to lead a weekly devotion with staff assigned to your care.
  • Coordinate with the Nurse and leadership team for possible medical transportation as needed. May be asked to drive or accompany hospital transport of campers or staff.
  • Turn in all camper-related forms promptly, such as, but not limited to, seeker forms, incident forms, safety reports, Notice of Concerns, and Observation Logs.
  • Provide a written weekly evaluation of staff under your care, outlining their strengths and struggles, to the Program Director.
  • Set a good example for campers and others including language, cleanliness, punctuality, sportsmanship, and table manners.
  • Responsible for routine daily cleanliness of public and personal spaces.
  • Lead and/or assist in Staff Snack Evening, including but not limited to, food preparation, distribution and clean-up.
  • Participate and/or assist in all summer camp programs as requested e.g., chapel, staff meetings, campfire, camp-wide games, night-watch, free-time, electives, rise and shine duty, etc.
  • May be required to serve as Break Day Supervisor for staff.
  • Last-day clean-up you will be responsible for the cleanliness of all living spaces and program areas under your assigned care.
  • Enforce respect for personal property, camp equipment, and facilities.
  • Develop and maintain positive working relationships with all staff, volunteers, and campers.
  • Enforce adherence to Camp and Salvation Army policies and procedures.
  • Ensure and provide supervision and physical/emotional safety for campers and staff.
  • Perform any other duties as assigned by Leadership.
  • Supervise and lead all swim sessions to ensure adherence to state and local operating procedures.
  • Plan, implement, and communicate with lifeguards and watchers of pool schedule and program details.
  • Conduct weekly swim tests for campers on the first day of camp.
  • Coordinate and supervise pool games for cabin activities and other scheduled swimming events.
  • Coordinate vacuuming at minimum, one pool each day on an alternating basis, in collaboration with Service Crew.
  • Maintain cleanliness of pool house, pool deck, and surrounding areas.
  • Organize and complete 3 water chemical tests for each pool daily, in collaboration with Service Crew.
  • Assist in the set-up and teardown of various areas around camp as the program dictates.
  • Help unload, move, and store supplies.
  • Attend and participate in all staff meetings, orientation, and other staff events.
  • Assist the Creative team with organized activities.
