About The Position

Port Angeles High School is seeking a dynamic, collaborative Head Girls' Wrestling Coach to lead, build, and oversee its growing girls' wrestling program. This role operates as an equal partner alongside the Head Boys' Wrestling Coach, working together to unify the overall wrestling program under a shared culture of excellence, sportsmanship, and mutual support, while maintaining specialized leadership, advocacy, and strategic vision specifically for the girls' program. The regular winter wrestling season runs from November 16 through February 20. Coaches must be available for weekday practices and dual meets, with regular Saturday tournament responsibilities. In addition to the competitive season, the successful candidate should be available to support off-season conditioning, recruitment, and summer program development in alignment with WIAA guidelines and community values.

Requirements

  • Previous wrestling playing (scholastic/collegiate) or coaching experience preferred, with specific knowledge of the rapid growth and unique dynamics of girls' high school wrestling.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of wrestling fundamentals, WIAA rules, safe weight management protocols, and positive sportsmanship.
  • Ability to plan and execute effective technique instruction, conditioning programs, and match preparation tailored to female student-athletes.
  • Proven ability to work in tandem and communicate seamlessly with the Head Boys' Wrestling Coach, athletic department administration, student-athletes, and parents.
  • Availability to commit to weekday practice/meet schedules and regular Saturday tournament trips throughout the season (November 16 - February 20).
  • Willingness and ability to drive school district vans to transport student-athletes safely to away meets and weekend tournaments.
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record to meet district driver clearance requirements.
  • Strong communication, organizational, and administrative skills, including tracking weight certification data and managing program logistics.
  • Must meet or be willing to obtain all Washington Interscholastic Activities Association (WIAA) and PASD coaching certification requirements.
  • Current First Aid/CPR/AED certification, or ability to obtain prior to the start of the season.
  • Must be willing to complete all district-required safety, harassment/compliance, and skin condition monitoring training.
  • Ability to maintain student confidentiality and adhere strictly to district and school policies.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, build, and oversee the girls' wrestling program.

  • Inform athletes and parents of inherent risks associated with wrestling, including safe weight management and communicable skin conditions.
  • Ensure conditioning, live wrestling, and technique drills match the physical readiness and skill level of the athletes.
  • Inspect wrestling mats, practice spaces, and venue conditions for hygiene and safety hazards prior to every practice and meet.
  • Ensure team gear, headgear, and mats are properly disinfected, maintained, and stored to prevent health risks.
  • Provide safe, current, and effective instruction on wrestling technique, weight maintenance, and rules to prevent injury and promote athlete development.
  • Maintain strict supervision of student-athletes in the wrestling room, locker rooms, weigh-in areas, and during travel.
  • Maintain athletic decorum, sportsmanship, and appropriate behavior in alignment with school and WIAA policies.
  • Drive district vans to transport team members safely to and from away duals and weekend tournaments.
  • Monitor hydration, safe weight management protocols, communicable skin diseases, and environmental conditions.
  • Respond promptly to mat injuries with basic first aid and execute emergency action plans when necessary.
  • Timely log match results, skin check documentation, injury reports, and administrative records as required by the athletic department.
