About The Position

The Head Coach will instruct athletes in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. This role also involves instructing students in moral values, pride in accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence. The position requires a significant time commitment, including evenings and weekends, and involves managing the physical risks of the sport through safety protocols and handling disciplinary or administrative challenges with fairness and discretion.

Requirements

  • Has a valid Illinois teacher certification.
  • Employed as a teacher or substitute teacher in District 187.
  • Substantial knowledge of the sport's technical aspects.
  • Must continue to examine new theories and procedures pertinent to the field.
  • Must effectively manage the inherent physical risks of the sport through rigorous safety protocols.
  • Must navigate complex disciplinary or administrative challenges with fairness and discretion.
  • Scheduling flexibility is required to accommodate changing school/district needs.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous coaching experience in assigned sports is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct athletes in fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training.
  • Instill moral values, pride in accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, and self-confidence in students.
  • Implement District 187 Board of Education athletic policies.
  • Adhere to existing system, state, and league regulations.
  • Refer all student and parent requests or grievances to the Director of Athletics and Activities.
  • Establish the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff.
  • Design conferences, clinics, and staff meetings for staff awareness.
  • Train and inform staff, and encourage professional growth.
  • Delegate specific duties, supervise implementation, and evaluate staff effectiveness.
  • Maintain discipline and increase morale and cooperation within the sports program.
  • Advise, coordinate, and support a staff of high school and middle school coaches.
  • Assist in scheduling and providing transportation to tournaments and special sports events.
  • Prepare for scheduled sports events or practices and adhere to facility times.
  • Coordinate programs with maintenance and school employees.
  • Provide documentation for physical examination, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Ensure proper safeguards for the maintenance and protection of assigned equipment sites.
  • Provide training rules and unique sports regulations to each participant.
  • Provide assistance, guidance, and safeguards for each participant at all practices, games, and while traveling.
  • Direct student managers and statisticians.
  • Determine discipline and delineate due-process procedures.
  • Contact parents when a student is dropped or becomes ineligible.
  • Adhere to NFHS, IHSA, and School Board Policy for coach conduct, certifications, and protocols.
  • Collect the cost of any equipment lost or not returned.
  • Arrange for issuing and storing equipment and submit an annual inventory.
  • Recommend budgetary items for the program.
  • Monitor equipment rooms and coaches' offices.
  • Permit athletes in authorized areas only at appropriate times.
  • Examine locker rooms before and after practices and games.
  • Ensure cleanliness and maintenance of specific sports equipment.
  • Instill respect for equipment and school property.
  • Assist the Director of Athletics and Activities in carrying out responsibilities.
  • Make press releases and school announcements.
  • Instruct team members on rule changes and teach fundamentals of the sport.
  • Maintain a record of team statistics and lettering requirements.
  • Work within the sport's basic framework and philosophy.
  • Attend all required meetings and carry out scouting assignments.
  • Prepare adequately before practices, contests, and meetings and remain afterward for discussions.
  • Help plan and implement in-season and out-of-season conditioning and weight programs.
  • Never criticize or admonish staff in front of players or parents.
  • Strive to improve skills by attending clinics and using available resources.
  • Attend contests of other teams in the program when possible.
  • Perform other duties consistent with the position and requested by the Director of Athletics and Activities.
