About The Position

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is seeking a Head Dance/Drill Team Coach for Sumner Academy for the 26-27 school year. KCKPS is a large, nationally recognized urban school district serving approximately 22,000 students. Sumner Academy is highly rated, recognized as the #6 highest rated High School in the Nation and #1 in Kansas. The district employs approximately 4,000 individuals, including over 1,800 teachers, to serve a diverse student population. The Head Coach is responsible for all levels and phases of the sport, ensuring all duties are completed correctly and on schedule, even when delegated to assistants.

Requirements

  • Certified teacher or qualify for Rule 10 certification through the Kansas State High School Activities Association.
  • Successful completion of a criminal background check.
  • Current certification in CPR and AED.

Responsibilities

  • Enforce all rules of the Kansas State High School Activities Association (KSHSAA).
  • Supervise student athletes during all facets of participation (competition travel, meetings, practices) to ensure safety and adherence to district policies.
  • Maintain records including physical exams, concussion forms, insurance waivers, medical releases, consent forms, emergency contacts, schedules, equipment inventory, game/student athlete statistics, and rosters.
  • Verify completion of all required forms and eligibility requirements for participation, including KSHSAA physical exams, concussion forms, insurance waivers, medical releases, tryout/participation agreements, activity tickets, and transfer student eligibility.
  • Implement and manage practice and facility usage schedules, ensuring efficient program operation and submitting schedules to administration.
  • Supervise practice sessions and maintain locker room security.
  • Report all participant injuries to proper school officials according to the coach's handbook and Board of Education policy.
  • Support and follow recommendations from athletic trainers regarding student safety, injury, and participation.
  • Adhere to all school and district policies and decisions.
  • Organize a system for uniform and equipment checkout, maintain inventory, enforce rules regarding equipment care, and ensure accountability at the end of each season.
  • Inform administration of equipment needs for safety and performance.
  • Conduct evaluations of student athletes for feedback and team placement.
  • Attend supporting activities such as league meetings, coaches meetings, parent orientations, recognition events, and banquets.
  • Develop team and individual practice regimes focusing on strength, speed, agility, nutrition, and injury prevention.
  • Evaluate facilities and playing fields for hazards and recommend modifications.
  • Oversee coaching personnel and student managers, providing direction and mentoring on instructional techniques, organization, and supervision.
  • Assign duties to coaching personnel and provide written evaluations.
  • Advise coaching staff, parents, and athletes on expectations of good sportsmanship and KSHSAA Rule 52.
  • Monitor student athlete academic eligibility and provide intervention (counseling, tutoring) as needed.
  • Report all team scores to media outlets and prepare public information releases (High School Only).
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Building Principal and/or Athletic Director.
