About The Position

The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness and security of the building and grounds. This role involves a variety of cleaning tasks, minor repairs, and supervision of other custodians. The Head Custodian also manages supplies and ensures the building is ready for events and daily operations.

Responsibilities

  • Sweeps, mops, waxes, and polishes floor finishes using manual or electrically powered equipment.
  • Dusts and polishes desks, chairs, shelves, equipment, brass ceiling and gymnasium lights, louvers, & other building furniture.
  • Cleans lavatories and restrooms using required detergents and sanitary materials.
  • Cleans chalkboards, erasers, equipment, trophy cases, and other fixtures.
  • Empties waste containers.
  • Unlocks and locks building, closes windows and turns off lights, locks and secures windows and sets alarm.
  • Washes all glass.
  • Moves and stores furniture, supplies, and equipment.
  • Reports to work at a time designated by supervisor, and removes snow from steps, walks, and drives.
  • Reports items that require major repair to supervisor.
  • Sets up and cleans stages, bleachers, seating, and other equipment for events.
  • Cleans wrestling mats with proper disinfectants.
  • Checks boilers.
  • Paints and repairs as needed.
  • Walks grounds around building and picks up trash/litter and objects that pose a safety hazard.
  • Regularly conducts safety checks of all restrooms and other areas in the building to ensure that graffiti is identified and reported to the supervisor.
  • Orders and stores supplies.
  • Provides in-service training of new employees (custodians).
  • Coordinates work schedule of the custodians, including work at activities.
  • Checks boiler operation daily and on weekends.
  • Supervises other custodians, including assisting on staff evaluations and checking the cleanliness and security of the building.
  • Completes weekly building and grounds walkthrough and submits a report.
