About The Position

The Head Custodian is responsible for ensuring schools are clean and safe learning environments for our students, staff, and communities. Responsibilities include direct supervision of assigned custodians and implementation of essential sanitation services. Performs daily cleaning tasks by using prescribed chemicals and machines; makes minor maintenance repairs. Performs inspections and ensures buildings are maintained to established cleanliness standards. This position is designated as “Essential Personnel”, which requires employees to report to work during emergency situations, such as snow, ice removal, or inclement weather.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of cleaning methods, materials, and equipment, including operation of commercial cleaning equipment such as high-speed buffers, carpet extractors, auto-scrubbers, and snow blowers.
  • Positive attitude and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, administration, students, and community members.
  • Good oral and written communication skills, good interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use or learn computer functions (email, internet, phone messaging).
  • Must exercise good judgment and the ability to make independent decisions and seek guidance when appropriate.
  • High school diploma, GED, or equivalent
  • Custodian work experience required.
  • Satisfactory health condition in order to meet the physical demands of this position.
  • Negative TB test required.
  • Successfully pass a criminal background check for employment with Charlottesville City Schools.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license in the State of Virginia.

Nice To Haves

  • A minimum of two years of supervisory or team lead experience is preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage the custodial staff, coordinate tasks, and areas of responsibility
  • Open the building; ensure the school is secured daily
  • On-call to respond to security alarms or meet law enforcement officials
  • Frequently inspects the building to ensure safety and cleanliness standards are met; reports deficiencies to the appropriate staff or department
  • Perform routine cleaning tasks and train custodians on proper cleaning procedures, chemicals, equipment usage, and safety
  • Attend professional development training and conferences
  • Provide performance feedback to custodians and input to the Principal for annual performance evaluations
  • Manage janitorial equipment and supplies, and submit monthly supply requests
  • Respond to a variety of faculty and staff requests, which include but are not limited to setting up for meetings, moving furniture (within the building), and unloading/storing deliveries
  • Conduct routine preventative maintenance on equipment
  • Familiarity with building mechanical systems such as water shut-off valves, main circuit breakers, fire alarm systems, etc.
  • Trash removal, dust and wet mopping, low and high dusting, restroom sanitation, restocking soap and paper dispensers, complete floor and carpet maintenance, etc.
  • Responds to accidents or potential safety hazards such as spills, restroom concerns, or student illness
  • Maintain building perimeter by trash removal, sweeping/leaf blowing sidewalks, steps, snow and ice removal, etc.
  • Conduct walk-through safety inspections with the Fire Marshal
  • Submit or review Facilities Maintenance work order requests
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks (i.e., replace ceiling tiles, light bulbs)
  • Schedule custodial personnel for building use functions and extracurricular school events requiring additional custodian support
  • Communicate regularly with the principal or designee. Inform of ongoing projects or issues concerning custodial staff or activities
  • Perform other duties as assigned
