About The Position

The purpose of this job is to coordinate six or more custodians at assigned school and participate in the cleaning and maintenance of buildings, grounds, and equipment; assign, direct, and inspect work of custodial employees. This role involves ensuring the cleanliness, safety, and maintenance of school buildings and grounds, including supervising custodial staff, performing groundskeeping tasks, and coordinating special cleaning projects.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • Two (2) years of janitorial or maintenance experience
  • Must possess and maintain a valid state driver’s license with an acceptable driving history

Responsibilities

  • Coordinates, assigns and reviews work, and establishes work schedules for custodial staff.
  • Maintains cleaning standards and monitors the status of work in progress, inspecting completed assignments.
  • Ensures adequate preparation and custodial staffing for special events.
  • Conducts daily inspections of buildings and grounds, instructing and supervising custodians in cleaning, waste/recycling collection, and grounds policing.
  • Assists in the instruction and training of custodians on the proper use and care of cleaning machines, chemicals, and equipment.
  • Keeps buildings and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, steps, parking, and play areas safe, neat, and clean at all times.
  • Reports issues related to heat, ventilation, and air conditioning systems, and other building maintenance items.
  • Inspects buildings during storms or other inclement weather events.
  • Ensures that doors and windows are secure when buildings are unoccupied.
  • Checks or assigns daily inspections of all exit doors and ensures that panic bars and lock mechanisms are working properly.
  • Ensures that classrooms are swept, and wastebaskets are emptied daily.
  • Ensures that classroom surfaces, including desks and countertops, are cleaned daily.
  • Ensures that corridors and water fountains are cleaned after school each day and during the day as required.
  • Ensures that restrooms (including toilets, urinals, sinks, walls, and floors) are cleaned with disinfectant daily.
  • Ensures that walls, doors, and furniture are cleaned or dusted weekly or more often if needed.
  • Ensures that all accessible windows are cleaned on both the inside and outside yearly.
  • Keeps the grounds free from litter.
  • Performs groundskeeping tasks such as grass cutting and tree trimming, as necessary.
  • Keeps all floors in a clean and good condition.
  • Operates floor scrubbers, buffers, and other equipment as required.
  • Coordinates the stripping and waxing of floors, as needed, during Summer breaks.
  • Reports major repairs needed promptly to the principal/department head.
  • Remains on the school premises during scheduled work hours unless approved by the principal.
  • Coordinates the opening and closing of the building each school day and ensures all doors and windows are secured and lights are turned off before leaving the premises.
  • Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel levels.
  • Requests supplies from the Environmental Services Coordinator in a timely manner.
  • Moves furniture or equipment within buildings as required for various activities and as directed by the principal.
  • Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash, rubbish, and waste.
  • Responsible for summer cleaning each year as assigned, which may include cleaning of light fixtures, walls, windows, floor refinishing, and carpet cleaning.
  • Performs related work as required.
