About The Position

This position is responsible for performing a variety of tasks in the cleaning, maintenance, and general upkeep of a school building and grounds. The Head Custodian I will oversee and participate in the cleaning of classrooms, offices, restrooms, and other areas, as well as perform minor repairs and ensure the safety and security of the facility. This role involves supervising custodial staff, managing supplies, and coordinating with school administration.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Three (3) years of custodial or janitorial experience.
  • Experience in cleaning and maintaining buildings and grounds.
  • Knowledge of cleaning chemicals and their safe use.
  • Ability to operate and maintain cleaning equipment.
  • Ability to perform minor maintenance and repair tasks.
  • Ability to supervise and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must be able to pass a background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in a school or institutional setting.
  • Knowledge of safety procedures and regulations.
  • Basic knowledge of building systems (e.g., HVAC, plumbing, electrical).

Responsibilities

  • Perform cleaning duties such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, and sanitizing surfaces.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms, including toilets, sinks, and floors.
  • Empty trash and recycling receptacles.
  • Wash windows and walls.
  • Perform minor maintenance and repair tasks, such as changing light bulbs, unclogging drains, and making minor adjustments to equipment.
  • Ensure the school building and grounds are clean, safe, and secure.
  • Operate and maintain cleaning equipment such as floor buffers, carpet cleaners, and vacuum cleaners.
  • Respond to emergency cleaning needs.
  • Supervise and direct the work of other custodial staff.
  • Manage inventory of cleaning supplies and equipment, and place orders as needed.
  • Coordinate with school administration on cleaning schedules and maintenance issues.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety regulations.
