About The Position

The Head Custodian is responsible for supervising all custodial operations within the school facility, ensuring the preservation of property values, protection of health and safety, and support of educational objectives. This includes overseeing the appearance and upkeep of the grounds, managing supplies, coordinating building use, and completing minor repairs. The role involves instructing and managing custodial personnel, maintaining schedules, and ensuring all facilities are in good working order. Key responsibilities include checking custodial runs for completion, resolving issues, and providing input on hiring and personnel matters. The Head Custodian also manages the stock room, receives and distributes supplies, maintains work schedules, coordinates overtime, and confirms timesheet accuracy. Regular facility checklists, reporting of vandalism, and coordinating snow/ice removal are also critical duties. The position requires the ability to manage and coordinate building use and to complete work orders for various maintenance issues, reporting any disruptions to the principal.

Requirements

  • Must be able and willing to perform duties and to direct others in performing similar duties.
  • Must be able to supervise and instruct custodial personnel.
  • Physically fit to perform manual labor.
  • Have the ability to read, write and understand the English language.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be neat in appearance and maintain good moral character.
  • Basic computer skills, email and Microsoft Suite.
  • Must be a constructive contributing member of a team.

Nice To Haves

  • Working knowledge of carpentry, painting, plumbing, cement work, electrical work, and maintenance of equipment is preferred.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise all workers engaged in custodial operations in the school facility.
  • Check custodial runs for completion and resolve issues.
  • Provide input in recommendations concerning the hiring, workload, assignment, effectiveness, transfer, and dismissal of custodial personnel.
  • Be considered the immediate supervisor of all custodial personnel in the building.
  • Be responsible for the achievement of the purposes of custodial services in the building, including preserving property values, protecting health and safety, supporting educational objectives, and maintaining cleanliness and neatness.
  • Be responsible for the appearance and upkeep of the grounds, including trash, courtyards, and grass area around the main entrance.
  • Orient and instruct custodial personnel on duties and responsibilities.
  • Assign custodians to summer work and events at school with the approval of the principal.
  • Maintain a list of supplies needed for the stock room and submit requests to the custodial supervisor for ordering.
  • Receive all incoming supplies and packages and deliver packages to recipients within the building.
  • Manage and replenish supplies in the stock room and distribute supplies to other schools.
  • Maintain the custodial work schedule and working hours as established by administration.
  • Coordinate overtime rotation and assign overtime as needed.
  • Confirm accuracy of all timesheets for both regular time and overtime and sign off.
  • Maintain and complete weekly and monthly checklists for facilities, including doors, lights, generator, elevator, and security alarm.
  • Submit a work order for any discrepancies found during facility checks.
  • Submit both a verbal and written report of vandalism to the principal.
  • In the absence of the principal, report vandalism to the Marlborough Police Department and District Education Center.
  • Check the school when called by Police or security company on off-hours and submit a written report to the principal.
  • Designate an alternate to be contacted in absence.
  • Complete minor repair work that does not require the services of a licensed person.
  • Manage and coordinate building use.
  • Distribute packages delivered to the school to appropriate locations.
  • Complete and manage work orders for all issues in and around the building, including plumbing, electrical, doors, windows, telephones, public announcement system, and IT issues.
  • Manage snow/ice removal operations for clearing sidewalks and doorways.
  • Report other repairs and emergency repairs through the work order system.
  • Inform the principal of any issues that may disrupt normal building operations.
  • Perform all other general duties as indicated by directives of the principal, Director of Finance and Operations, Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Marlborough School Committee.
