About The Position

Under the supervision of the Director Sport Programs, the Head Coach Martlet Hockey is responsible for overseeing McGill’s women’s hockey program, including the coaching, management, and coordination of the team. The mandate more specifically includes varsity student-athlete recruitment, mentoring, and academic athletic progression, as well as alumni relations. The Head Coach, in collaboration with Athletics and Recreation, University Advancement, and Marketing and Communications staff, will also be actively involved with alumni relations, fundraising, and community outreach.

Requirements

  • Experience and critical thinking capabilities in dealing with varsity student athletes within high performance sport.
  • Possess a clear and genuine communication style, which includes listening intently, to connect with the varsity student-athletes and build their trust with the end goal of maximizing potential.
  • Experience with creating innovative and highly organized yearly training plans (YTP) that will keep the varsity student-athlete engaged and challenge their athletic limits while still prioritizing academic success.
  • Extensive knowledge of and experience in university level hockey.
  • At least 3-5 years coaching experience with post-secondary student athletes, national or professional setting.
  • Advanced coaching education and training streams as offered by the National Coaching Certification Program and Hockey Canada HP1 certification required or can be in progress.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex tasks and initiatives and prioritize appropriately.
  • The ability, using exceptional communication skills, to build strong relationships with both external and internal stakeholders, including but not limited to supervisors, peers, participants, and sports administrators and officials.
  • Experience with MS Office programs and using a PC.
  • Working knowledge of social media platforms as they relate to the organization.
  • Strong writing and presentation skills and competent oral fluency in English and French.

  • Must be authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based / located.
  • English language proficiency level assessed at a level # (qualifier) on a scale of 0-4.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience leading and interacting with a large team of students and technical specialists in a post-secondary setting and within a sport integrated service model is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Manage a team of professional assistant coaches and technical specialists.
  • Develop and manage effective recruitment and retention strategies.
  • Identify and recruit prospective varsity student-athletes who meet McGill’s academic standards and would be an asset to the University and the team.
  • Provide senior professional coaching services to varsity student-athletes on sport specific teams.
  • Coach and develop varsity student-athletes to gain and develop skills and high-level technical and tactical knowledge.
  • Provide the student-athlete leadership group with guidance and shared mandates to develop and nurture an exceptional student athlete experience.
  • Design programs and set objectives to ensure that varsity student-athletes train and perform to a high standard.
  • Provide expertise in the development and implementation of policies, programs, and systems that support the program and unit's initiatives.
  • Oversee the implementation of short and long-term goals and objectives related to the functioning of the program.
  • Actively engage with sport leagues and associations, conferences, Quebec CEGEPS, and with high schools provincially, nationally, and internationally.
  • Build partnerships with local, regional, and national sport organizations to promote the University sports programs.
  • In collaboration with other professionals in the areas of fitness, and strength and conditioning, sports psychology, nutrition and sports science, work with physiotherapists, doctors, nutritionists, dieticians to provide optimal conditions for training, return to competition and performance.
  • Collaborate with University Advancement on implementing fundraising activities and athletic financial award programs.
  • Act as the team spokesperson and participate in press conferences and media interviews.
