About The Position

The Head Coach for High School Boys Basketball is responsible for instructing student participants in the fundamental skills and knowledge of the sport, fostering individual development through monitoring, evaluating, and reinforcement. This role involves developing practice activities, managing equipment, enforcing safety rules, and effectively communicating with players, parents, supervisors, peers, and spectators. The coach will model activities, diagnose player needs, and instruct assistant coaches. Additionally, the position requires supervising students on out-of-town activities, analyzing sports effectiveness, ensuring participants understand training rules, assisting with scheduling, and documenting eligibility requirements. The coach will also assist in hiring assistant coaches, manage a budget, handle public relations, and promote academic achievement while serving as a liaison for post-secondary scholarships.

Requirements

  • Be 21 years of age or older.
  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Pass a background check.
  • Certified in CPR and AED (certification must be current).
  • Completed the KHSAA Sports Safety Clinic.
  • Completed the KHSAA Rules Clinic for the specific sport.
  • Completed the NFHS Coaching Class.
  • Satisfactory completion of State mandated health examination.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in coaching school affiliated sports preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Develop drill and practice activities that teach and enhance individual/team skill development.
  • Develop and maintain an inventory list of equipment.
  • Prepare and implement a schedule for checking out, maintaining, and checking in equipment.
  • Plan and enforce appropriate safety and health rules and regulations.
  • Develop a supervision plan that ensures the safety and welfare of students at all times (locker room, trips, practices, etc.).
  • Present a professional appearance.
  • Effectively communicate with all audiences: players, parents, supervisors, peers, and spectators.
  • Model/demonstrate activities and equipment used to develop basic skills or physical condition.
  • Observe, diagnose, and prescribe appropriate remediation activities during practice and game conditions for players and team.
  • Apply developmental stages of the game to the needs and ability levels of the team/players.
  • Supervise students on out-of-town activities, which may involve staying overnight.
  • Instruct assistants in techniques necessary to meet the objectives of the sport or activity.
  • Analyze and evaluate sports effectiveness.
  • Provide training rules and expectations and ensure rules are taught to each participant.
  • Assist in the scheduling of the sport or activity.
  • Document the state and district's requirements for physical examinations, parental consent, and eligibility.
  • Assist in the hiring of assistant coaches.
  • Develop and follow a budget in line with the district's guidelines and expectations.
  • Responsible for public relations with all audiences.
  • Manage through appropriate selection, assigning duties, and responsibilities and monitoring of assistant coaches.
  • Promote and directly work toward academic achievement during the high school career.
  • Serve as a liaison for post-secondary scholarships and other financial incentives.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the supervisor.
