About The Position

The Head High School Boys Track Coach is responsible for instructing participants in the fundamental skills, strategy, and physical training necessary for individual and team success. The role also emphasizes the development of moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, self-confidence, and sportsmanship. The coach is expected to implement quality principles and tools to improve program effectiveness and adhere to UCSD Actions of Excellence.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of Sports and Rules.
  • Demonstrate proper care of injuries and injury prevention.
  • Demonstrate and convey knowledge of sport.
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and abide with the rules and regulations governing the sport.
  • Demonstrate consistency with the philosophy and ethics.
  • Appropriate BOEE licensure.
  • Repetitious bending, lifting, and hand movement.
  • Ability to work while standing, moving and/or walking.
  • Drug, tobacco, and alcohol-free while working.
  • Must be able to see and hear within normal limits with or without corrective lenses or hearing aids.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle used to travel between sites.

Responsibilities

  • Instruct participants in the fundamental skill, strategy, and physical training necessary for them to realize a degree of individual and team success.
  • Formulate and internalize moral values, pride of accomplishment, acceptable social behavior, self-discipline, self-confidence, and sportsmanship in student-athletes.
  • Implement "quality" principles and tools to improve the effectiveness of the program.
  • Promote sportsmanship at events and practices.
  • Prepare and implement practice plans and set yearly goals for each team as well as the program as a whole.
  • Display good team preparation in areas of team mechanics, emotional readiness, and skill development.
  • Show concern for the safety and well-being of athletes.
  • Command respect and set the example for athletes.
  • Respect others and remain ethical in dealing with others.
  • Share knowledge and cooperate with other coaches, showing respect for other sports and programs.
  • Remain positive, encouraging, and supportive in criticism of players.
  • Establish and maintain consistent discipline in accordance with administrative policy.
  • Demonstrate concern for the athletes’ academic program and conduct.
  • Show respect for athletes as individuals.
  • Inform student-athletes of the potential hazards and the possibility of serious injury with the improper or proper use of equipment and in participation of the sport itself.
  • Appropriately acknowledge student achievement.
  • Cooperate in developing eligibility lists, equipment needs, and program information.
  • Require all athletes to complete the necessary pre-participation requirements.
  • Be punctual and responsible with inventory and other duties.
  • Display accuracy and care in record keeping.
  • Follow Athletic Department policy in all areas to include: record keeping, reporting inventory, transportation, purchasing, fundraising, and program management.
  • Manage the entire program, not just the varsity level.
  • Provide supervision and administration of team members in regard to contests and events, practices, buses, and locker rooms.
  • Cooperate with the various staffs and administrations.
  • Participate in in-service and professional athletic meetings.
  • Accept recommendations and suggestions from supervisors.
  • Implement an effective public relations program in regard to the news media, colleges and universities, parents, and students.
