About The Position

The Head Coach - Cheer is responsible for developing, promoting, and supervising all aspects of the University’s Spirit Squad program, specifically the cheer team. This role requires adherence to the rules and regulations of the NCAA, University of North Dakota, and its conferences. The coach must demonstrate a commitment to compliance, provide support and encouragement to spirit squad members, and ensure their safety and well-being.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Previous cheer team coaching experience
  • USASF [USA Spirit Federation] Certified
  • Successful completion of a Criminal History Background Check
  • Ability to encompass the strategic mission of the University of North Dakota and Intercollegiate Athletics with tact and diplomacy at all times
  • Strong interpersonal, creative, motivational and communication skills
  • Excellent organizational, project management and problem-solving skills
  • Fluency of social media platforms outside of personal use
  • Ability to communicate and adhere to University, Summit League, Missouri Valley Football, NCHC, and NCAA policies, procedures, rules, and regulations
  • Ability to work nights and weekends

Responsibilities

  • Develop, promote, and supervise all facets of the University’s cheer program.
  • Supervise social media activity of cheerleaders and cheer staff.
  • Develop a competitive cheer program.
  • Coach team practices and games, manage practices/games, and handle gameday preparations.
  • Motivate cheerleaders and develop their talent.
  • Provide academic and disciplinary supervision of cheerleaders and promote related policies.
  • Achieve academic success and help cheerleaders maintain academic eligibility.
  • Follow all NCAA, conference, and UND rules and regulations, including UND Licensing.
  • Provide support and encouragement and ensure the safety and well-being of the cheerleaders.
  • Maintain required certifications as they relate to cheer.
  • Recruit quality prospective cheerleaders, considering character, academic, and athletic variables.
  • Conduct the recruiting process with integrity, ethics, and knowledge.
  • Exhibit an achievement-oriented attitude with high energy and motivation.
  • Effectively manage admissions and eligibility issues.
  • Maintain effective professional working relationships with cheerleaders, staff, administration, alumni, the general public, and NCAA and conference officials.
  • Hire and supervise quality volunteer assistant coaches, as applicable.
  • Demonstrate an effective work ethic, concentrating on efficiency and timely completion of tasks and requested materials/forms.
  • Support other department coaches/staff as a member of the department/UND staff.
  • Ensure team participation in community service activities.
  • Maintain contact with spirit squad alumni.
  • Serve as a spokesperson for the University’s cheer program as directed.
  • Develop community support for the program and participate in Athletics department activities.
  • Initiate and execute fundraising efforts for the cheer team.
  • Assist with the marketing and branding of the sport program, including the use of social media.
  • Manage and be responsible for all running and hosting of camps/clinics/family events/alumni events, etc.
