About The Position

The Head Basketball Coach is responsible for coaching at practices, games, and working individually with student athletes, which constitutes 95% of the coach's responsibility. The role also involves supervising assistant coaches, volunteers, and managers. The coach will perform components of the sports program, including teaching sports-specific fundamentals and strategies, and will be responsible for the daily operation of the basketball program, including budget management. Key responsibilities include identifying and recruiting academically qualified student athletes, reinforcing their goal to graduate, and actively supporting the endeavors and advancements of the Stephens Athletics Department. The coach must operate within the guidelines of Stephens College, AMC, and NAIA Rules and Regulations, coordinate scheduling and travel arrangements for team travel and recruiting, and promote the academic and athletic well-being of student athletes. Developing and maintaining quality relationships within the community, both on and off campus, is also a crucial aspect of the role.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
  • Demonstrated a minimum of three (3) years of successful coaching experience with NAIA or NCAA preferred.
  • Good interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability and success in teaching the skills and fundamentals of the sport.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to NAIA rules and regulations.
  • Ability to organize and motivate student-athletes to maximum performance level in sports and academic achievement.
  • Proven experience in recruiting highly motivated and qualified student-athletes.
  • Good organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to use computers for data entry.
  • Obtain and/or maintain a Missouri Class E driver’s license and ability to meet university’s insurance requirements for driving college vehicles.
  • Current certification in first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automatic external defibrillator (AED) use is preferred at the time of hire and will be required prior to coaching student-athletes.
  • Extensive internal face-to-face contact, telephone, email, mailing and other mediums of dialogue with university personnel.
  • Significant interaction with faculty, staff, and students on a daily basis.
  • Work extensively with other departments on campus.

Nice To Haves

  • Master’s degree preferred.
  • NAIA or NCAA coaching experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of the institution, AMC and NAIA athletics preferred.
