About The Position

The Head Baseball Coach is responsible for leading, organizing, supervising, and administering the high school's baseball program in accordance with VHSL regulations, school board policies, and school division procedures. This seasonal, stipend position provides leadership for the varsity baseball team and coordinates with junior varsity coaching staff to ensure consistency in program philosophy, instruction, player development, and expectations. The Head Coach is responsible for developing student-athletes' baseball knowledge, fundamental and advanced skills, competitive performance, sportsmanship, leadership, academic responsibility, and personal growth. The position promotes a positive, safe, and inclusive athletic environment that reflects the values and expectations of Hopewell City Public Schools.

Requirements

  • High school diploma
  • Prior baseball playing and/or coaching experience
  • Thorough knowledge of Virginia High School League (VHSL) baseball rules and regulations
  • Ability to effectively instruct, motivate, develop, and supervise high school student-athletes
  • Strong leadership skills
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Strong program management skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively with assistant coaches, school administrators, families, and the athletic administration
  • Completion of all VHSL coaching education requirements
  • Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification
  • Successful completion of all school division and state-mandated background checks and coaching certifications

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and conduct varsity baseball practices, competitions, and related activities in compliance with VHSL rules and regulations.
  • Provide instruction in baseball fundamentals, advanced techniques, game strategies, conditioning, and skill development appropriate for high school athletes.
  • Provide leadership and direction for the overall high school baseball program, including coordination with junior varsity and assistant coaching staff.
  • Establish consistent program expectations, coaching philosophies, instructional approaches, and player development goals across all levels of the baseball program.
  • Assign and coordinate appropriate duties among assistant coaches and promote effective collaboration within the coaching staff.
  • Supervise student-athletes before, during, and after practices, games, transportation, and all VHSL-sanctioned activities.
  • Verify and monitor student-athlete eligibility, including academic standing, required physical examinations, and other VHSL participation requirements.
  • Enforce VHSL, school board, and athletic department policies consistently and fairly.
  • Promote and model VHSL standards of sportsmanship, ethics, integrity, teamwork, and respect.
  • Evaluate individual and team performance, provide constructive feedback, and develop strategies for continuous improvement.
  • Support the academic success, personal responsibility, leadership development, and well-being of student-athletes.
  • Maintain accurate records related to VHSL compliance, including team rosters, eligibility documentation, participation records, and other required athletic forms.
  • Coordinate with the Athletic Director regarding scheduling, transportation, facilities, equipment, and other operational needs.
  • Maintain accurate inventories of uniforms, equipment, and supplies and support the proper use, storage, and care of school property.
  • Monitor field conditions, equipment, and facilities and communicate maintenance or safety concerns to appropriate personnel.
  • Communicate effectively and professionally with student-athletes, parents/guardians, coaching staff, school administrators, and athletic administrators in accordance with school guidelines.
  • Promote positive relationships with families, school personnel, and the community that support the baseball program and school division.
  • Ensure the safety, health, and well-being of student-athletes through appropriate supervision, conditioning, injury prevention practices, and established emergency procedures.
  • Coordinate with appropriate school personnel regarding injuries, medical concerns, and student-athlete participation restrictions.
  • Attend required VHSL rules clinics, coaches' meetings, and professional development sessions.
  • Support appropriate offseason conditioning, skill development, and program improvement activities as permitted by VHSL regulations.
  • Assist with approved fundraising activities and follow school division procedures for handling funds, purchases, and program expenditures.
  • Collaborate with the Athletic Director to assess program needs, establish goals, and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned by the Athletic Director or school administration.
